A reader recalls summer nights troubled by mosquitoes and likens their nuisance to wartime air raids in Europe. The piece contrasts Canadian nights with English shelter life, noting how a pest can rob sleep and remind readers of potential danger and disruption faced abroad.
The piece urges all Canadians over sixteen to register for a nationwide war effort tally. It notes voluntariness but enforces registration, led by registrars and assistants, with secrecy to protect data. Employers will ask employees to show registration cards on August 21.
A reminiscence recalls earlier volunteer enlistment rituals with station send offs and parades, contrasting past glamour with the present two week training period for new recruits.
The article argues that modern warfare favors secrecy over parade and glamor. It notes that enemy reconnaissance can reveal troop movements and rail plans, urging civilians to learn discipline and restraint by observing necessary silence and subtlety in wartime reporting.
The provincial government weighs delaying public and secondary school openings to accommodate farm duties. Acton observes few farm-working youths among 300 to 400 in school, suggesting delaying attendance only for those actually employed on farms. The plan wins backing from schoolchildren.
Halton builds a splendid volunteer registration drive with no pay for workers and buildings donated for three days. About fifty Acton volunteers join others across the county, studying their tasks to aid the war effort and free funds for other services.
Editorial warns Acton residents of a serious housing problem with rising demand and no top limit on next week’s registration for all over 16. It urges Monday or Tuesday for filing, notes holiday accidents heightening casualties, and mentions Acton Fair as a key event.
The lesson explores Psalm 23 as a depth rich with guidance for believers. Jehovah as shepherd provides rest food drink and guidance, leading through trials toward safety and eternal presence. The narrative emphasizes trust obedience and the Shepherd’s care from rest to a banquet and lasting mercy.
Parliament adjourned for the summer rather than prorogued as in recent years. Major items include Canada’s Second Division welcomed in England under Major-General Victor Odlum, contracts worth over 11 million dollars awarded by the Department of Munitions and Supply, a 100 million bushel wheat purchase with Britain, Dominion war commitments over 1.036 billion dollars, the commissioning of a former British destroyer as HMSC Margaree, and the creation of a separate Atlantic defence command under Major-General W H P Elkman to oversee coastal defences and Newfoundland troops.
The text reflects on divine protection and mercy guiding believers as they approach the end of life. It emphasizes that nothing compares with the assurance found in Christian faith and eternity. It notes that the New Testament interprets Old Testament riches of meaning, citing John 14 and Thessalonians references.
