Crop Conditions Vary From High Grain Yields to Poor Pasture Lots
In Halton county last week binder and threshing machines were active as harvest moved quickly toward a normal grain crop. Yields vary across crops with wheat averaging 30 to 35 bushels per acre and oats around 45 bushels. Alfalfa seed stands look strongest since 1926, while red clover prospects seem poor. Drought has stressed dairy herds and irrigation questions arise, with alfalfa and rotational grazing favored over irrigation for pastures. Fruit growers report slowed pears and concerns over early apples inspection.
