Acton Council met in regular session and discussed by laws affecting dog control and poll tax collection. The meeting reviewed sanitation, town hall repairs, street lighting, and welfare expenditures while noting dog season timing proposals and a poll tax liability of 120 residents with about 440 dollars in dog tax revenue.
Protestant ministers of Acton urge the community to join a united service of intercession at the United Church at 7.30 pm on Thursday in view of the ongoing serious European war situation.
Mrs. M Leitch spoke to the Fireside Group at the YMCA on Sunday evening urging youths to choose a vocation and work toward it. Charles Lansborough and Doug Maples performed a cornet duet to an encore. The sixty young people sang well and Presbyterian Young People served lunch. Two travel films are planned for next Sunday evening.
The Township of Eramosa council met in Rockwood Town Hall on April 8 1940 with all members present. They approved Bell Telephone Co requests to reconstruct lines on the Eramosa Erin boundary and set May 13 for the next meeting. The auditors report for January and February was accepted and relief accounts for unpaid taxes were ordered held. Arrangements were made to inspect township roads and attend the Road Conference at Kitchener. Accounts passed totaled 725.00.
The Acton Women's Institute held its regular meeting at Mrs. W. J. Re’s home. First Vice-President Mrs. Lappin chaired, a Canada Institute for the Blind Tag Day appeal was discussed, Velma Murray reported on the Toronto Agricultural Convention, District President Mrs. Cowan and District Secretary Miss Margaret Brown attended, Mrs. Reid was thanked for hosting, and prayers and a luncheon followed.
Acton Agricultural Society readies a fall fair with Home and Farm Improvement features after last year's success. Two competing groups may enter, chaired by F P L Wright who reports many entries. Judges, special features, and potential club projects are being organized for a large district event.
The Off-Season Fre' Force defeated One Aberfoyle Team 7 to 0 led by N Merton with 744 triple and 293 single. W Corry was runner up with 676 triple and MT single as Force teammates posted strong scores amid a local sports update.
Salvation Army District Officer Captain Poulton reports the Red Shield Drive in Acton is a splendid success. Public spirited citizens led by E E Barr contributed 409.40 with canvassers and scouts delivering receipts, enabling continuation of practical Christianity.
The Rev G C Gifford and fifteen members of the Acton United Church Choir traveled to Georgetown on Tuesday evening to lead the musical portion of the gospel service. They participate in a two weeks preaching mission shared by Georgetown Baptist and United Churches with Rev Dr Duncan McIzod as preacher, recently back in Canada after thirty two years of missionary work in Formosa.
The Staple Grove Literary Society met at the school for a social with progressive euchre and prizes won by Mrs. A Shultis for both lady and high gent. A brief business session followed lunch and a vote to hold one more gathering before closing. The evening ended with dancing.
Hon Harry Nixon minister of Qame and Fisheries announces the Crout season will open April 27 an advance of five days from May. He says the shift allows anglers a weekend opening and predicts a strong year with many trout distributed from hatchery ponds in 1090 totaling 2.98 million yearlings and adults and 0.937 million fingerlings.
The April meeting of Knox Young Women's Ancillary was held at Miss Banna Cole's home. Mrs. E Marstal led the devotion and Min Urana McDonald gave the prayer. Min Grace Lantz read a chapter from the study book. Miss Mildred Hollings read. After business, social time followed over tea cups. President Mrs. R Spielvovel presided.
The United Church Young People’s Union met in their regular weekly session on Tuesday evening. Mr John Pell led a sing song, with Miss Velma Murray at the piano. Mrs Bennett delivered the main address about Such Sunder Singh, a native Indian Christian, which was greatly enjoyed and appreciated.
The Acton Juniors met at Lorne School on Thursday evening April 4 with President presiding. Mansell Nellis chaired the program featuring Ospringe Orchestra selections, Dena Watson recitations, John Pell on dee-box mowers and silk stockings, a Farmers' Club update, and a Can nest debate on whether a single person has more reason to be happy than a married person, ending in a tied audience vote.
Hughes Cleaver announces plans to organize farmers in Hulton County after the election. He outlines two main farm problems and urges meetings to discuss remedies before forming an agricultural group, citing wartime abnormal conditions and Dominion efforts to organize agriculture.
The committee hosted a closing program with a singing of the Nadame Anthén and dancing. It was decided to accept an invitation from the Palermo Club to visit them on April 17.
The Bloomsbury Literary Bottery hosted a two hour film session by Spruceleigh Poultry Farms Brantford. Films included Skiing in QuaeC Bandings a color Poultry Farm housing 17 000 hens and a tour of the King and Queen. A caterpillar tractor progress segment northern lumber camps a comic strip and a wrestling match followed. Lunch and a social hour concluded the event.
Announcement of upcoming events includes bingo at Legion Hall on Wednesday April 17 with 25 cent admission and good prizes. The Knox Players present The Life of Riley at Town Hall on Wednesday April 24 at 8 PM.
