School honor roll lists students from Senior Fourth to Senior Primer with scores and totals for each class. Teachers and principals cited, with multiple students named across grades and sections.
The Easter drama Resurrection was staged last evening at the United Church by the Young Ladies Friendly Circle Sunday School Class. Miss Z Bennett chaired. Miss Ruth Gilson welcomed the audience. Mrs J Y Adamson spoke on Christ’s life. Ruth Gibson sang The Stranger of Galilee.
A cluttered reader notice shows several pages listing local shops and services for the week. Names include Crest Corn Salve Hank of Slowtess Pallant's Clothing and Gregory Theatre with various storefronts and product lines. An indignant father rants about Santa Claus and fibbed eggs warning neighbors about a supposed Santa stash.
A long running Acton bakery dating to 1867 changed ownership this week. Mrs. Edwards of Acton sold the grocery and baking store on Mill Street to Mr. A. McDonald of Durham who runs baking shops in Durham Chatsworth and Hepworth. The Statham family had operated the business for decades with previous ownership by D. O. C. Ywassel and Woodcock Bros. The Edwards family will remain in the home on Church Street.
Neighbors rescued Miss Haliie Oakes 65 from her Castle district residence as flames consumed her general store and upstairs living quarters. A large stock of groceries hardware and household items were lost in the blaze started by glowing embers. Austin Coulson and his brother Hunter were among the first to spot the fire and raise the alarm.
The marriage of Misa Ada Myrl Early daughter of Mrs Early and the late Thomas Early took place at the mother’s home Norval with Roy Stanley Harrop son of Mr and Mrs D Harrop. Rev Norman McMillan officiated. The bride wore shot turquoise crepe and carried Sweetheart roses. They will reside in Norval and plan a motor trip to the States.
The April Eramosa Township meeting at Rockwood Town Hall approved applying for road liability insurance of 5000 to 10000 pounds and a 4 per cent wage based accident policy. It accepted John McLaren’s contract for supplying and delivering crushed gravel at 48 cents per cable yard and authorized payment of 1377.58 dollars, with council adjourning to May 7 at 7 PM.
Victoria Mission Hand of Knox Church held its April meeting as a birthday party celebrating 35 years since the Band was organized. Past leaders residing in Acton attended, with messages, greetings, and a candle lighting ceremony. Music by local vocalists and a junior Easter pageant followed, and lunch was served.
In Galt on Monday night Knox Guild defeated Central Church in the second round of the Presbyterial debate on the topic Co operation has done More for Progress Than Competition. Debaters Jos Hunt and Miles Yasabel Bruce led the negative with strong proofs while six carloads of fans traveled to cheer. Judges from Galt Collegiate praised the team. Miss Macdonald, on furlough from Japan, met the Galt Society members before departing in August.
A progress report on bovine tuberculosis testing covers February 1 to April 1 in Walton and Peel. Halton tests 617 herds totaling 7 030 cattle with 140 infected herds and 1 285 reactors, compensations totaling 41 520 66 dollars paid. Peel tests 570 herds totaling 6 800 cattle with 106 infected herds and 1 320 reactors, compensation 45 285 dollars.
Edward eld, an aged man, was found two miles southwest of Acton after wandering for several days. He was unable to walk, appeared in Acton on Friday, and was taken to jail for trial by Ga. A. Dills, Stratley of the Peace, with trial set for next Wednesday.
Acton School led a three day festival at Burlington with Nassagaweya Limehouse and Dublin schools. Pupils won gold silver and bronze in solo and duett numbers while choirs took two first places and two second places.
Acton and district schools excel at the Halton County Musical Festival held at Trinity United Church Burlington. Acton won Junior Choir and Boys' Choir trophies plus high marks in 40 and 60 voice choirs. Rural and urban pupils earned multiple medals in solos and duets, led by directors Miss Hunt and Mrs Gowdy, with solid showings from Nassugaweya Limehouse Dublin schools.
The regular Women’s Institute meeting was hosted by Mrs W Chisholm. President Mr Gamble presided as members sang The Old Rugged Cross and prayed. Reports covered motto and community activities with talks by Mrs Roney and Mrs Dishop and selections by Mrs Chisholm. A social period followed with thanks to Mrs Chisholm and the Lunch and Provisions Committee.
The Walton Holstein Breeders and Milk Producers Association held its annual banquet in Milton with over 150 attendees. President Herbert Inglehart hosted a program featuring Prank Orchestra, the Lowville Quartet, and a two act Merton Dramatic Club play. Dr G I Christie spoke on building a strong agricultural industry, praising the audience and noting Ontario college ties.
Stewart Robertson 45 of Hornby died from a fractured skull after his car left the road and overturned in a field two miles north of Oakville. Coroner Dr. Wilkinson ruled death accidental. no inquest. Robertson was found by John Bentley on his way to work in Trafalgar Township.
In Marathon a meeting on Thursday evening at the Hop of the Navend appointed Mrs BK Garr as delegate to the Provincial Convention of the LODE. The program featured a solo by Mrs WW Bennie and a reading by Mrs M Nelson of a King’s grace portion prepared by Mya Murr. Hostesses were Mrs B J Mansard and Mrs J Lelahunatn.
A Hallon temperance meeting in Milton at 2 00 p m featured Rev Whitham and Rev Coborn urging a local campaign ahead of a provincial referendum. Officers appointed include President HLT Foster and Secretary J H Willmott, with representatives from Esquesing Nassagaweys Nelson Trafalgar and conveners for a Childhood and Youth Movement to educate countywide.
The daughter Mary Warbara Lawson married Russel Graham King on a Saturday afternoon at the Lawson farm in Esquosing Township. Rev Adaby Urwin officiated at St Pauls Milton. Bridesmaid Edweng Marshall of Toronto and groomsman Earl King attended. Out-of-town relatives from Toronto and Galt joined about forty guests. The couple will reside on the groom’s Homby farm after a trip to Wauregan Connecticut.
The Lakeside Chapter of the Daughters of the Empire held its regular meeting on Wednesday April 1 at Mrs Jon Cowl's home with many members present. Hostesses served lunch after final arrangements for a forthcoming event. A relief baby shower was held Tuesday evening at Miss Marguerite Ryder's.
Nassagaweya Council passed the accounts for relief road and village expenses and heard a deputation on the railway crossing at Campbellville. The Reeve will raise the issue with the Railway Committee. a by law to enlarge School Section No. 10 was ordered, and Dr. Wlack in Medical Quarters was noted with a salary. The meeting adjourned to May 4 at 1 pm.
At the meeting chaired by J. M. McDonald trustees discussed the school creek being used as a dumping ground and instructed the Secretary to notify the Council. They approved a letter of appreciation to the Directress of Music and staff, planned toilet cleaning, and arranged for Kuustine supplies. The fourth Finance Committee report itemized payments to Red Jacket Coal, Hassard, Savage, Lockhart, Blue Ribbon Ink, McDonald, Dominion Insurance, Evan Jones, Moyer, Norton Motors, Symon, Acton Utilities, Blair, National Stationers, totaling $128. The report was adopted.
Dorie Cavell Alberta Holloway daughter of Edwin and Mrs Holloway Acton wed Norman J. Morton son of Mr and Mrs John Morton Acton at St Alban s Church on Thursday. Rev B Brillinger officiated. The bride wore pale blue crepe with black accessories and brown tweed for travel. Best man was Russell Morton. They honeymooned in Buffalo NY and will reside in Acton.
The Acton Women's Institute hosted a Euchre and Dance last evening with W. J. Buchanan and C. Letehiman as top players in euchre. Mrs. Rapp and Theo Moore won second prizes, Mr. Farnsworth took the lucky prize, and Franky Orchestra provided music for the dancing.
