Rainbow wins the fourth race while Sopwith protests. Percy Rockefeller dies at fifty six after wealth and stress from 1929 value losses. Maynard voters at a special town meeting approved buying the Assabet House for town use. The price was 3000 plus 690 in 1934 taxes, with 1600 to come from the water fund and notes not exceeding 2100 to be repaid in up to six years. A seven member committee was to study electric rates and a municipal light plant.
Parker shifts his hardware business from Main Street to a new store on Nason Street. He has run the shop in Maynard for 42 years and is regarded as one of the town’s longtime merchants alongside William Case and P. J. Sullivan. Johnson Pharmacy, started by Benjamin Johnson, remains a longstanding town institution now led by Charles Warren in the Avis section.

Sudbury artist Florence Armes Hosmer, longtime Sunbury art teacher, presents oil portraits in the Boston City Club gallery. Her family has lived in town over 35 years, and she owns a brick house in Centre Square. Hosmer retired after budget cuts affected the school system. She also shows colonial era pictures highlighting New England spirit.
Funeral services for August Silvonen of 25 Main street were held Saturday afternoon at WA Twombly parlors conducted by Pastor Jacob Rinta of the Finnish Congregational church. Burial followed at Glenwood cemetery after injuries from a fall near his room led to his death at Massachusetts General Hospital.
A joint outing of Hudson Marlboro and Maynard teachers clubs drew wider town participation from Berlin Bolton Gleasondale Stow and others. A committee to organize a permanent event was named with Miss Agnes Sweeney Marlboro Miss Elizabeth Teehan Maynard and Lewis Lovett Hudson.
District Deputy J Harold Dale visited Corinthian Lodge AF and AM in Concord on Monday October 8 with a large entourage of Masons. The gathering honored War William Graham and noted 54 years Masonry by War Herbert Hosmer who, with Mrs Hosmer, celebrated 50 years of marriage and Hosmer’s 80th birthday near week’s end.
Concord artists present water colors from Europe and Paris by R Norman Hudspeth and others including Russell Smith, Thomas Wood, and oil works by Mary James. Mrs Peter Whyte returns with two pieces not previously exhibited as the show runs through October. Mr Kettell adds etchings continuing this period.
Concord U E S Chapter met at the Masonic Temple in Concord with Mrs. Cora M MacLeod presiding and Theodore Heyliger assisting. The group plans to entertain Past Matrons and Patrons at the next meeting on November 14 and held a novelty whist party with 15 tables and prizes awarded to several members.
The Concord Lodge of Elks outlined plans for a busy Fall season at last week’s meeting in Elks Hall. A rehearsal for the initiation was held in preparation for the Military Night event.
In St. Casimir's church Maynard sees a double ceremony as Mary Derkas weds Alexander Kulevich, parents of the groom renewing vows on their 25th anniversary. Rite features Rev Dzick and a full church. reception follows with guests from multiple cities and a Beacon Shoe Shoppe connection.
The Emergency Nursery School at Roosevelt school is now open under Misses Cole and Taylor. Children learn body hygiene and health, receive meals for one week with crackers, then chocolate milk, and partake in tomato juice from IFRA garden tomatoes. A rest cot room is provided and visiting hours are every Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
A Maynard store belonging to Isaac was broken into. Police are investigating the incident and reviewing security footage for possible suspects and motives.
The Concord Enterprise honors Frank Pierce, dean of local business, on his 85th birthday on Columbus Day. At his Old Mill Dam shoe store, now Main street, he marks 69 years in Concord and is the sole Civil War era storekeeper still remembered by leading locals and authors.
Registrars of Voters warn today is the last chance to register for the state election with registrations open from noon to 4 pm. Nearly 70 new voters were added in a two session push and more are expected, boosting the anticipated record turnout. Local interest centers on Representative Frank Sheridan seeking reelection in the 10th Middlesex district. New registrants include Hellen I. Mattson, Michael Russo, Mary Kelley Jr, and many others across multiple streets.
The Roma Lodge Sons of Italy held a Maynard Columbus Day event with a parade led by the Rossini Band of Na tick and Legion participants. A Parke Street Hall concert followed, with local officials praising Italian heritage after speeches by a grand lodge representative. Rinaldo Mariano elected Roma Lodge president. The organizing committee included Vincenzo Porgzaro chair, and members Michael De Grappo, Loreto Arceri, Domenic Muriacio, Carlo Palmuci, Silvestro Costanza, Anthony Buscemi, Alexander Pozvarro, Benny, Louis Di Persio.
Vladimir Mikitiuk age 53 of Maynard died last Sunday night. He was born in Russia and had lived in Maynard twenty years. The funeral was held yesterday from the home of Mr and Mrs Joseph Batulin 17 Railroad street.
Major C Sidney Coulter U S Army has retired and settled with his wife and three children in the Barker house in South Acton. The Maynard native who served with the AEF as a First Division officer recalls Cantigny and Paris, and old residents greet him warmly. He is 53 and among the heroes who helped forge American battlefield reputation.
Maynard H S field hockey travels to Malden for a fierce Pearl Street contest seen as as hard as any school football rivalry. Last year Maynard won 6 0 in an oversize win and both teams seek another thrilling battle as Coach Ruth Finn leads the eleven. Concord game added for November 16 at Concord play grounds.
D H Bezanson a longtime West Acton resident died at his home after a long illness in his eightieth year. Born May 3, 1855 in Windsor Nova Scotia he moved here 55 years ago and worked at Hall Brothers mill. He married Ida Foote in 1888 and is survived by four daughters and seven grandchildren from local families.
Maynard Charles Arnold aged 56 died Sunday night at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He was born in Maynard and lived in West Concord since childhood. Survived by his mother Mrs Whitman and Walter Whitman. burial in Glen Cemetery. Funeral held at 501 Main Street in West Concord with Rev W Stone officiating.
The meeting was led by Mrs Weter as president with teachers in attendance. The gathering discussed association aims and upcoming activities for educators.
