Winchester High defeated Maynard High 10 to 7 at Alumni Field to seize the Middlesex League lead. Frankie Provinzano starred, throwing a 47 yard pass to Josephson for the winning touchdown and kicking a 16 yard field goal. Maynard battled back with N N T Ignachuk and Al Fraser sparking a late push.
Mrs Martha G Haley of Lancaster Road Sudbury died Monday afternoon after a long illness Her funeral will be Thursday at 2 PM at the Methodist Episcopal Church where she was a devoted member She was a past noble grand of Sumner P Lodge chapter Mebexahs No 177 and member of Neponset Chapter No 141 Odd Ladies the Grange and Sudbury Woman's Club She leaves a daughter Mrs D Roy Smith a sister Mrs Walter Labaree and three grandchildren Loring Bruce and Constance Smith Born in Pictou she was 66 and a Sudbury resident for many years
A Diphtheria Immunization Program is under way for school and preschool children. Clinics will be held at Roosevelt School in December. Health officials urge parents to immunize all children as diphtheria remains deadly for ages five to nine and Massachusetts records show high mortality among under five.
More than 80 relatives and friends gathered at the Pleasant home in Acton to celebrate Mrs Eliza Jane Owen’s 85th birthday. Attendants included daughter Mary Qwen, granddaughter Mrs Stannard Sylvia, grandsons Bernard and Lawrence, and relatives from Wakefield Newton and Colorado.
The Maynard 1928 H and Cass class plans its first reunion and banquet at the Stow County Club on Thanksgiving night. Reservations must be made via Mrs Hulda Nelson, 32 Roosevelt Street. The 1928 officers were George Tucker president Lawrence Lever vice president Hulda Nelson secretary and Harold Nordberg treasurer. The class graduated forty three members.
Concord Hawthorne Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star hosted Past Matrons and Past Patrons with a supper and program at Mungonie Temple. Mrs. Beulah Blair declined further service, Warren Goddard was elected president, and a memorial for Benjamin Derby was observed. Twenty four Past Matrons and Patrons attended. The Worthy Matron presided at the regular meeting and a novelty whist party was noted. An electric chafing dish was presented to Benjamin F. Clark on his recent marriage.
Licenses for the sale of intoxicating liquor will expire Dec 31. Several current licensees have filed applications for renewal with the Board of Selectmen, which will grant licenses for the next year.
The 17th annual Red Cross Roll Call progresses with strong participation under Vice Chairman Miss Avis Fowler. Local canvassers include Mrs. Harold D. Cluttim, Mrs. Harold W. Chase, and many others, while Patrolman James F. Fian of the Concord Police reports capturing 15 year old Joseph Flint who escaped Fernald School in Waltham.
Christopher Mullen of River street was fined $20 after appealing a 60 day local court sentence for assault and battery on Earl V. Aldrich a PRA administration technical advisor in Cambridge Middlesex Superior court.
Emil Noterman of Acton was elected commander of the new local VFW Post No. 3163 after its charter approval. Officers include James Smith Littleton senior vice, William Neuss East Acton junior vice, Henry Bayeur West Acton quartermaster, John P Sisson West Acton chaplain, John Davis West Acton post advocate, Arthur Tupper Boxboro officer of the day, and trustees James Gibney Littleton Harry Scribner West Acton Harry Moore West Acton. A meeting Friday November 23 will organize an auxiliary and set installation preparations at the West Acton fire house.
Acton centre appoints Mrs Catherine Condon to the position of postmaster succeeding Acting Postmaster Harold Coughlin who declines the post to devote time to his business.
The Screech Owl, Maynard High School's paper, publishes prize winning stories by students Sylvia Glickman Elizabeth Schnab and James J Ledgard Jr. The Thanksgiving issue includes news and notes for parents and townspeople. Judges were Mrs. Matthew Vance Miss Honors MecCarm and Guyer Fowler.
A fire at Mead Block on the corner of Massachusetts and Windsor avenues Thursday afternoon required nearly an hour to extinguish. A furnace fire in a vacant store lit inflammable material. smoke filled the first floor and second floor apartments. Prompt alarm likely prevented greater damage. the site recalls a major blaze years ago.
A Maynard vote recount begun Saturday and finished at midnight left results largely unchanged. A 20 vote gain for County Commissioner Republican Victor Jewett came from Hamilton Socialist, while one Moyse vote was reallocated to blank. No other changes altered totals for state senator Cahill, congressman Casey, clerk of courts Brennan, or party allocations for Moyse and Foss.
Bedford Paul Revere Chapter of the order of Easter Star held its regular meeting last Thursday afternoon in the Grange Hall with a fine supper after. The official inspection was conducted by Helen V. Carroll deputy grand marshal assisted by Ella G. Kent deputy grand marshal. Several vocal selections were sung by Mrs. James Richardson.
Concord Mrs Leslie O Ander son receives congratulations as her sand dune scene from the North Shore near Gloucester earns first prize at Boston Worcester and National Exhibitions of Photo Finishers in Chicago. The photo’s processing was done at Snow Pharmacy and is on display in the Walden street window.
The Maynard Water Department headquarters will be located in the new town building on Main Street, formerly the Middlesex House, starting Saturday Nov 24. The Selectmen's office and the tax collector's office are to be relocated to the same town office building by week’s end.
Bedford Grange elected its officers for the coming year last Monday evening with B E Converse as Master and Leona C Lydiard as treasurer. Other posts include W R Alger overseer H A Schofield lecturer Thomas Johnston steward S Albani assistant steward J Belle Blake chaplain and Maude S Conley secretary.
Maynard Post VFW and Auxiliary officers were installed in a Sunday ceremony at Masonic hall with guests from Hudson Charlestown and West Acton VFW posts. State officers and local officials spoke after a collation and entertainment.
Sudbury residents filled the evening as four one act plays received praise from the Sudbury School Athletic Association. Casts for Junior to Senior programs were listed with actors’ names and roles, recognizing imagination and artistry that earned the approval of the audience.
Mrs. Jane A Courtney widow of Abraham Courtney died at her home 28 Nason Street Maynard Tuesday morning aged 89. Born in Preston England she lived in Maynard 38 years. Survived by two sons Charles and John Courtney and grandson Walter Courtney. Funeral Tuesday at 10 at 12 Brooks Street home of Charles Courtney conducted by Rev Mathew A Vance. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery Woonsocket.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Richardson of Waltham formerly Sudbury celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today. Born and educated in Sudbury they lived there until about 15 years ago and enjoy good health with many friends sending best wishes. Maynard Office changes include Atty John Driscoll and Francis Cleary occupying Selectmen's rooms in Cregoton's block. Driscoll son of police Sgt. Driscoll and a Northeastern Law grad with an office on State Street Boston. Cleary known in the insurance business will move to the new location.
