Patrick Callan of Maple Street died suddenly after returning from aiding a woodland fire. He collapsed while mowing his lawn, was aided by neighbors, and died at his base before medical help arrived. The coroner cited probable overexertion and heat. He was 71, born in Ireland, longtime superintendent at Lathan Jones Farm, and a devoted family man remembered for kindness. Burial at St. Bridget's Maynard followed a High Mass.
