Dickens First Wolverhampton Reading of the Christmas Carol in 1858

Charles Dickens gave his first Wolverhampton reading of the Christmas Carol on August 11 1858 at the Corn Exchange before a crowded audience. He was accompanied by Arthur Smith and stayed briefly at the deanery with Rev Parke before continuing to Birmingham. The night sparked lively laughter at the tank scene and Dickens recalled the incident with Cuthbert Bede.

Sewing Bee At First Parish Meets For Charity

The Woman's Parish association held a monthly sewing bee in the vestry of the First Parish Meeting House on Monday. Mrs Prescott Keyes read a Canada relief letter requesting socks and other warmth items for soldiers. A tale on The Romance of a Christmas Carol was shared, followed by tea and social hour served by Misses Marion Keyes and Julia Wheeler.

Longest 1917 Middlesex hockey schedule announced

Manager Abbot Low Mills completed a 12 game 1917 season schedule for the Middlesex school seven. Captained by Jashish Holmes Jr. of New York, the team includes four other veterans. A championship game with Concord High is planned for January 31 in Concord.

The Woman's Club Travel class met December 1 in Miss Roberts studio. Grace Keyes gave an instructive talk on the Azores with stereopticon views. Charlotte Brown read letters from the late Elien Emerson. Embroideries by native artisans were shown. Afternoon tea followed.

Death of Mrs Derby at Sudbury Road Home

Mrs Henry Derby died of heart trouble last Saturday at her Sudbury road home in N A C age seventy nine. She leaves a daughter Ida and two sons Henry and Harvey. Her husband Henry Derby Sr. died three years ago. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at her residence conducted by Rev L B Macdonald.
