Clyde Ohio a notable Civil War and Spanish American War nexus
Clyde in Sandusky County stands as a historic hub. It produced the highest ranking Civil War officer killed and the first American killed in the Spanish-American War, with ties to the origins of the Women’s Relief Corps. Notable burials include General James B. McPherson and George B. Mack. Local lore credits Hattie McPherson with forming the early Ladies Aid, the precursor to the corps, and notes Clyde sent more volunteers per capita than any town its size in both wars. President Chester A. Arthur was slated to deliver a monument unveiling in 1881 before a train tragedy altered plans.
