Eight Die As Mexico City Riot Fires Sweep City

Rioting in Mexico City lasts six hours with soldiers firing on the mob at Zocoto and attacks on El Imparcial. Estimates of deaths range from 7 to 30 with many wounded as crowds protest Diaz and Corral not resigning. A woman in the galleries urged the crowd and mobs then marched through the city toward the president’s residence.

Rogan Ships Sawdust to Paris on Scientific Request

Daniel Rogan of the Independent Sand and Gravel Co. shipped one hundred pounds of sawdust to Paris France on Tuesday. The freight totaled 8 dollars 70 cents. The shipment was made at a scientific friend’s request in Paris, purpose undisclosed.

Succumbs to Consumption

Albert Stevens age 19 adopted son of Councilman and Mrs. R J Hilts died at 1 am Tuesday from consumption. Adopted in Juneau after Mrs Stevens death. father died later in London. Hilts spent much money seeking treatment. Albert came from an excellent family. his grandfather was a professor at Gills college, Montreal. Funeral held this afternoon.

Plans to bring 10000 settlers to Washington by railroad ad drive

Louis W. Hill of Great Northern outlines a cooperative scheme with commercial clubs to collect names and addresses of Eastern and Middle Western residents. The railroad will mail West literature and humorous pictures, then follow up with personal letters to potential immigrants. New Utilities Law Explained by Washington Public Commission

Seattle May 24 Members of the state railroad commission soon to be public service commission explained the new utilities law to owners and agents of Puget Sound steamship and barge lines dock firms and terminal properties. The rule abolishes passes on water lines for most users and requires public tariffs for freight passenger rates and terminal charges with 30 days notice before changes. The law broadens commission jurisdiction to most water craft and terminal operators, sparking questions and careful study among attendees.

Rail freight cuts eyed to lift Northwest sash and door trade

Northwest rail leaders from Great Northern Northern Pacific Chicago Milwaukee and Puget Sound and O W R N plan rate reductions for sash and doors shipped in carload lots to the Middle West. A 20 percent cut to Colorado points is cited as possible. Washington mills have bottlenecked outbound trade due to high freight costs, now targeted for reallocation. A June 1 start on a $30 000 three story building by Pacific Telephone and Telegraph is noted.

City council adopts 60 percent rule for petitions on improvements

The council on McCaw's motion set a rule requiring petitions or protests on local improvements to be signed by at least 60 percent of affected property owners. Numerous projects proceed with limited publicity, while several street, bridge, sidewalk and roadway actions, bids, and ordinances were discussed or approved.
