The Chehalis county party leaders announce a Jefferson Day banquet in Montesano on April 12 at the Eagles hall. The Democratic Central Committee seeks Governor Lister and Thomas Vance as speakers, inviting many county Democrats to attend the first major gathering in sixteen years.
A Chehalis County Tax Dodgers clash centers on timber land assessments. Responding to a timber cruise dispute, Assessor Robert A. Wiley, backed by the State, plans to backdate taxes on long-untaxed timber tracts, potentially yielding thousands in back taxes and triggering litigation.
In Montesano on March 27 children from local grade schools joined an egg hunt arranged by Sept. Eldridge Wheeler who bought 500 colored eggs and distributed them free. Vacant lots around the school became hunting grounds with high school helpers assisting. The student with the most eggs won a 35 prize. Wheeler praised for investing time and money to improve pupil life and school standing.
Montesano reports Justice of the Peace L B Bignold a pioneer Chehalis county lawyer dies after two months of typhoid fever. He is the fourth family member afflicted and one daughter died from the disease.
The Herald received a postal card from Mrs. T. M. Axford formerly of Montesano noting that Mr. and Mrs. John R. Evans of this city were guests at the Axfords home in Sawtelle California on Easter Sunday and were enjoying their time splendidly.
Jack Oyo longtime Hoquiam Chehalis Indian member died during an epileptic fit while en route from Satsop to Hoquiam. He survived by his son Johnny Oyo and a few Hoquiam clan members. Oyo born and raised on the city site held substantial county property and had $10 000 on deposit at First National Bank.
Mr H P Potter general agent of the O W for Grays Harbor says a new motor car service between Aberdeen and Montesano will be in effect by May 1. The announcement confirms the forthcoming route and timing for regional transportation improvement.
Progressive Republicans Kent Lenroot and Anderson announce joining a new House third party with Victor Murdock to back progressive policies. J A Falconer of Washington says he will enter the Progressive faction to secure open caucus access for press and public.
Miss Lillian Fleet and Edward Keating Bishop married in a candle lit ceremony at the bride’s Montesano home conducted by Rev. W E Bates. Attendants included close relatives and the couple planned a train trip to Southern California before settling to a home on Spruce street after May 15.
Hugh A Wallace a Civil War veteran aged 77 died Monday at his daughter Mrs Moore home in Hoquiam. Funeral services were held today at the Presbyterian church under Masonic lodge auspices. He had long resided in Aberdeen at 311 Curtis street and is survived by his wife and four grown children two sons and two daughters. Remains shipped to Tacoma for burial.
C H Frye reports three permanent Seattle based retail locations in Bellingham and one each in Aberdeen and Hoquiam expanding the meat price war to Western Washington. The campaign aims from packing house to consumer with ongoing price reductions on porterhouse steaks and other items while unions show limited involvement. Frye says these stores are permanent Frye products shipped wholesale from Seattle to Grays Harbor towns.
The Young People of the Swedish Mission church announce a social entertainment at the church next Saturday evening. A musical program has been arranged and a cordial welcome will be extended to all visitors.
Cities of Grays Harbor prepare to aid flood districts in Ohio and Indiana. Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce directors meet and plan relief. Aberdeen council adopts resolution urging relief measures. Hoquiam Commercial Club directors to meet at noon to discuss relief, with a probable Hoquiam committee appointment.
More than 100 property owners met at Hoquiam city hall to discuss grades for the L street improvement district. A three man committee led by Clarence Pettit will survey contractors today about reducing the grade by 18 inches and report at a mass meeting tonight. The committee members are G. T. Sayers Virgil Smith and J. B. Hickin.
Judge Ben Sheeks issued two orders in the Michael Hauland versus City of Aberdeen and Daniel McKinnon case. He denied the demurrer and required an answer within five days and denied the motion to compel a more definite complaint. The judge also dismissed the State and Millard Petersen versus county commissioners and C W and Sarah Yana case and taxed Petersen with $18 costs for the Yanas matter regarding the South Bay addition to Westport.
The Police court jury found the Klappe stores technically guilty of violating the new advertising ordinance but remitted any fine stating the violation may not have been wilful and that the Klappe’s were not sufficiently informed of the ordinance provisions.
