Mexico hires James A. Bruere once New York City chamberlain to study and implement city efficiency reforms. The move aims to modernize administration and cut waste as officials seek stronger municipal management. Bruere’s background includes financial oversight and public budgeting roles.
A large fire destroyed the Panama Eastern Lumber Co saw and planing mills in Hoquiam on Tuesday evening. Loss is estimated at 150000 with about 60000 insurance. Firefighters could not reach the scene due to road conditions and water supply was limited. Northern Pacific crews saved five of seven box cars. one car burned. Negotiations to rebuild reportedly in progress, possibly by new owners.
Hoquiam committee reports good progress for the annual Sons of Norway picnic to be held July 8 at Westport. Members M. Knutson Axel Berg J H Melkild Peter Brudevald Oscar Moe and Ben Klock oversee arrangements with tickets from Standard Union and Pilot. about 300 expected to attend.
Aberdeen reports a Red Cross war fund total between 28100 and 28200 with about 2200 subscribers. Most cash arrived during the campaign, 9500 of the Aberdeen quota of 19000 paid in cash. remaining 3950 covered by 90 day pledges. Local committees credit the canvass teams and aim to mail official receipts after final accounting.
Joe Rychlac, a member of the Aberdeen fire department, is bound to the federal grand jury in 3000 bail for failing to register for military service. He claims to be 19 but previously claimed 23 and 21 to obtain a liquor permit. He was taken to Tacoma by Deputy Marshal Secrist and now questions his American status, insisting he is a Polish by birth with uncertain origins.
A barn and silo owned by Michael Hwastiak in Wishkah valley burned down Tuesday night. The structure and contents were lost. insurance on the property was $1,000.
At a meeting of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce executive committee the proposed military road along the Pacific Coast from San Diego to Puget Sound was endorsed.
Aberdeen Shipyard workers toil night and day to launch the second government ship at Grays Harbor Motorship yards. The keel will go down within a week or ten days with timbers already on site. Two additional slips are completed and planking advances. Yard expansion will allow seven ships at a time. The Grays Harbor auxiliary motorship, sister to the Santino, nears trial spin and will be sent to the East Coast next month. The vessel belongs to Gaston Williams Wigmore of New York. A third bandsaw is being installed as framing begins on the first government vessel Monday.
A large patriotic parade is planned for tomorrow evening led by a 25 piece military band from the Second Regiment Washington Infantry. Company I baseball team and torpedo boat crew will march, with all city military men and recruiting offices invited. The G A R and Spanish American War Veterans join, as do ten Red Cross teams from the drive. Afterward the Regimental band performs at the armory.
Hoquiam prepares for the Splash carnival week with earliest arrival of the Sound Amusement Company. Crews will place shows along I and Seventh streets, decorate storefronts, and string street lighting on Eighth and I streets and on Sixth Street.
Mrs. M. L. Watson of Hoquiam is named chairman of the Women's Service League for Grays Harbor County with Mrs. Ruth Karl McKee stepping down. The league seeks voluntary registration for training and service under divisions of the National League for Women's Service, not a government census or official national staffing.
A Grand hotel mass meeting drew about 400 sympathizers as telephone operators protested a company disagreement. W L Brackenreed chaired the Aberdeen Central Labor Council event with speakers including Charles Perry Taylor J M Phillips O C Whitney and Rev John W Miller.
Sheriff Bartell and Aberdeen Hoquiam police monitor California arrivals to thwart bootlegging for the Fourth of July. After the Doris seizure, they found liquor on Hanify and Chehalis, with 15 quarts and 12 quarts seized respectively as boats docked. Authorities patrol the harbor in a swift launch and search each arriving vessel.
At a Young street meeting of property owners Monday night councilmen Weiland and Strommer attended. They endorsed a protest against planking and urged a permanent roadway with partial city funding since the road leads to the cemetery.

Congress survey approval is sought, with all regional senators and representatives in favor.
The annual election of officers for the local branch of Post Office Clerks was held Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Lancaster. Mary L. Dinse was elected president E J Eccles secretary and C C Hopkins treasurer. Delegates to the state convention at Centralia July 4 include J R Freeman and Joe McKnight with E G Clark and Louis B Kaifer designated for carriers representation.
In Montesano on June 28 the jury found Myron Kilgore guilty of grand larceny after a 30 minute deliberation. The theft involved about $900 in liquor from Harry Higgins and Chas Whitman. Witness Jack Lawrence testified Kilgore and accomplice Vernon stole the booze and loaded it for delivery. Kilgore claimed he planned to pay for the liquor the next day but fled 12 miles up the Wishkah valley amid an approaching auto.
The Orpheus Quartette presents a Summer Garden Follies tonight on the Weatherwax grounds to benefit St. Andrew's church. The program features vaudeville singing military drill and fancy dancing for attendees.

Martin Spellisey an early county pioneer died Monday night at his home 1105 East First Street aged 70. Funeral was held Wednesday at St Marys church with high mass and he was buried in a steel vault at Fern Hill cemetery. A native of Ireland he came to the United States at 18, lived in Iowa where in 1870 he married Margaret Brown who survives with three children John Margaret and Joseph Spellisey. He moved to Aberdeen in 1885, first living in Elma before settling in Aberdeen.
Exemption boards for Washington state have been approved and announced. Grays Harbor county lists W. D. Campbell as county auditor Jeff Bar told as county sheriff Dr. G. E. Marcy represents the first district H. W. Patton Jerry A. McGillicuddy Jr as county commissioners and Dr. G. I. Hurley as member of the board.
Dr. Earle J. McClung of Montesano has earned a commission as first lieutenant in the regular army after passing the required examinations and expects a call to join the colors soon.
More than 1500 quarts of whiskey were seized on the steamer Doris at the F. G. Foster Co dock in Hoquiam. Nine crew members were fined $50 and costs each after pleading guilty. The raid occurred after 1 PM and ended after 5 PM with whiskey found throughout the vessel, including under floors and in storage spaces. Public interest drew a crowd as cartons and sacks were moved to police headquarters.
About 200 residents of the North River valley petition the O W R N Co to run a gasoline motor car on its line, proposing two daily trips if possible. They argue the service would cover its cost through local traffic from farmers, mill workers, and loggers, aiding a cheese factory and the valley’s rich agricultural development.
