The Crescent hotel cafe and grill room have been leased to Newell and Larson, experienced caterers, who plan a first class cafe serving regular meals and operating the grill at all hours.
Chief Richard Adams of the Delaware Indians visited Tacoma then departed for Washington D C. Rumors persist of a syndicate of Eastern capitalists planning to develop oil lands on the Quinault reservation amid seepage and expert praise of paying wells. Adams plans to establish an office at Moclips to push the development while lease approvals rest with Indian commissioner H H Johnson upon his return.
At an Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce meeting directors approved securing money and land for the proposed university on Grays Harbor. President Mumaw was authorized to confer with the university trustees about spreading the $100,000 donation over five to ten years to ease subscriptions.
At Montesano on June 9 the board of county commissioners heard a petition from about 100 Polson Logging workers regarding the C D Hanson road. Foreman Jacob Schneck urged relet of the contract, while commissioners questioned costs and right of way. They pledged to proceed when funds and lines are secured. South Bay Ferry contract awarded to J B Benson after a coin toss with George H Parr. Lazy Husband law funds sought by Mrs Selli of Aberdeen ahead of the law taking effect.
Clara Kortengard six years old drowned Saturday evening in the Chehalis river near the Bay City mill. The child, who was playing near the river, fell in and could not be revived. Funeral held yesterday afternoon from the Bay City residence with interment in Cosmopolis cemetery.
The Tacoma Chamber of Commerce will lead a three day train tour for Tacoma businessmen from June 17 to June 19 through Southwestern Washington visiting Wilapa Harbor Grays Harbor and Vancouver. The Trade Extension Special includes four sleepers two dining cars and observation and baggage cars. George Scofield emphasizes the trip will boost Tacoma’s trade standing against Seattle and Portland by meeting regional business leaders in person.
The J M Weatherwax High School night school ends Friday and will reopen in fall. The program started June 17 last year with 406 men and 83 women from diverse European nations learning law reading and writing and English. Many learners advanced from total illiteracy to basic literacy by year end.
Mrs. Mary Nagala aged 32 widow drowned Thursday in the Elk River near the bay at Bay City. Her body was found on the mud bank by Chris Wehr who reported the incident to relatives in Aberdeen. She had come from Hamilton Ohio to keep house for her uncles and planned a yearlong stay.
Hoquiam High School representative Melbourne Levi placed second in the 220 yard dash in 23 seconds and third in the 100 yard sprint in 10 seconds flat at the Tacoma stadium interscholastic meet. Tacoma led with 56 points followed by Broadway Seattle 18 Queen Anne Seattle 13 Rosalia 19 and Hoquiam with 4 among twelve schools competing.
Montesano June J Spinks manager of the Crist laundry died at his home after a week of illness from pneumonia. He was 50, left a wife, a stepdaughter, and three grown children living elsewhere. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon.
Copalis Lumber, a Carlisle-Pennell subsidiary, bought 20.2 acres plus adjoining state land totaling 42.02 acres between Grays Harbor Lumber plant and Sixth Street waterway in Hoquiam for 7500. The site will host a modern sawmill, with dredging planned for the Sixth Street waterway. A. P. Sprague and H. C. Heermans led the effort. Sprague expects to return from Portland soon to announce the project.
