First Sunday Law Trial Ends In Acquittal In Aberdeen

The first case under the Sunday law of 1881 resulted in the acquittal of P. J. McHugh with a six to six initial split. The trial before Police Judge Fox lasted under a day with a six to six verdict, while questions of constitutionality and evidence dominated the proceedings and local sentiment opposed further city costs.

Elma Hikes Taxes as Timber Lands Hit Higher Assessments

Chehalis county officials meet as board of equalization to raise timber land valuations from 25 to 30 percent and up to 50 to 100 percent for lands slated to be logged. Elma petition seeks 40 percent municipal tax increase to fund waterworks and improvements. Local notices urging timber owners to show cause. Public notices include endorsements from KE. L. Anti-Trust Republicans Challenged Over Trusts and Tariffs

Democratic members of the House caucused on June 27, 1902, denouncing Republican dominance by trusts and monopolies. They urged immediate passage of stronger anti trust measures and tariff relief, while criticizing Congress for inaction and adjournment without reforms. Police Court Harsh Week Ends with Fines and Expulsion

Justice Fox presided over a lively but unpleasant session in which two women labeled nuisances in the red light district were fined and warned. Officers Kelley sponsored defendants including E Erickson Jack Evans Oscar Laidor and A Crary who used offensive language and resisted arrest. Crary paid ten dollars and all were ordered out of town as they loitered in restricted districts.

State school law questions clarified by Attorney General ruling

Attorney General Atkinson holds principals need not require state eighth grade examinations for admission to high school. High schools may admit grammar pupils without the exam, with principals allowed to condition a grade pupil. The state superintendent sets minimum credits for promotion but cannot draft exam questions. Also includes Shakespearean verse and local sale ad text with a shoe company notice and Aberdeen athletic meeting notice.

Inadvertent Error Corrected in G H Railway Valuation

The Herato corrected a misstatement about the Grays Harbor Railway and Light Co assessments noting the 1907 value rose by 7 583 dollars from the prior year. The county figures from the assessor’s office show the company as the sole electric railway in the county with combined light and railway operations.
