Floods Tuesday caused extensive destruction across Upper Carolina. Savannah suffered severe damage with trestles washed out and rail lines under water, including the Savannah valley branch and Anderson to McCormick sections. J L McMillan reports heavy losses at his Dysons brickyard, with 400,000 bricks destroyed and surrounding property flooded.
Telegraph reports from Georgia describe Savannah area high water flooding 10 miles wide near Augusta with rivers rising and washing away crops and mills. Seaboard line halted trains as Long Cane Creek overflowed, creating an island of about 300 acres near Bradleys Mill. Pacolet Mills reported lost though unverified.
Report from Abbeville August 28 1908 states nine mules drowned after a rapid rise of the river near Calhoun Falls. Dam damage at Gregg Shoals delayed power plant operations and local steam power was overwhelmed. Six passengers routed to Atlanta later traveled Savannah by boat then to Elberton before resuming service between Elberton and Atlanta.
The county sustains destruction of 18 bridges valued from 1000 to 4000 dollars each, a calamity unseen in fifty years. Damages to crops are equally heavy and total losses cannot yet be estimated. Small bridges are excluded from these figures, suggesting an immense overall impact.
A railway notice states departure from Cross Hill at 3 PM toward Monroe with no baggage transfers or express handling over the Saluda River. It warns of a very slow, stopful schedule with no positive arrival times between stations. The Southern Railway line remains open Washington to Atlanta and trains run Elberton Georgia to Atlanta Georgia, with transfers at Savannah River not yet possible.
Word from Washington Georgia via a rural carrier to Mt. Carmel reports Augusta nearly destroyed by a fire fed by flooding. The blaze reportedly started at J. B. White's store, with the pumping plant flooded. Albion Hotel and White's store among losses. total damage estimated at five million dollars. No life loss confirmed.
Mr L P Harkness of Antreville reports the Little River rose ten feet higher than any time in local memory after the recent Monday and Tuesday flood. He cites 80 year old neighbor Zeke Norris who recalls no water proximity to such heights.
Returns show Aiken leading by about 2300 to 2500 votes in the Third District contest. Abbeville County voters favored him, and he values the backing from his home folks.
The government asks a rehearing against Standard Oil Co. It contends Landis justified in a twenty nine million fine and Grosscup erred in reversing the trial court.

Washington reports a weather bureau flood bulletin warning of dangerous widespread floods from heavy rains since Sunday across the Carolinas and Eastern Georgia. Savannah River at Augusta may reach 38 feet by midnight Wednesday, threatening city flooding. telegraph links cut. Catawba, Wateree, Pee Dee rivers exceed prior records. Raleigh totals ten inches since Sunday. railways halted, bridges washed out, crops lost. Oconee and Ocmulgee rivers above flood stage. Alabama River to see high water through September.
