Floods Tuesday caused immense damage across the upstate. Savannah area communications cut as Saeatmah raged and railroad trestles from Anderson to McCormick washed away. J L McMillan's brick yard near Dysons suffered total loss of 400000 green bricks and wood. Water three feet deep in Dysons store rooms.
Telegraphic reports from Augusta indicate the Savannah River widened to ten miles yesterday as floodwaters washed away crops and damaged cotton. Rail service is disrupted with no trains running except to Greenwood and Calhoun Falls while Long Cane Creek overran its banks creating a 300 acre island. Pacolet Mills status unconfirmed.
A flood on Aug 28 1908 drowned nine mules left by Mr Brough near Calhoun Falls after a rapid rise in Saluda River. The dam at Gregg Shoals suffered great damage delaying power company operations. Six passengers traveled from Monroe to Atlanta with diversions, while bridges across the county suffered losses totaling about 35000 dollars.
A note states trains will depart Cross Hill at 3 P.M. for Monroe with no baggage transfer and no guaranteed time due to a very slow schedule. It mentions open Southern Railway between Washington and Atlanta and that no transfers at Savannah river yet, with trains running from Elberton to Atlanta.
Word from Washington Georgia through a rural carrier to Mt. Carmel says Augusta nearly burned to ash after a flood overwhelmed the pumping plant. The fire started in J. B. White's store and demolished the Albion Hotel and other houses. Estimated total damage five million dollars. Loss of life not learned. The Press and Banner credits J. H. Ramey for the information.
Mr L P Harkness of Antreville visited the city and said the cataclysmic rise of the Little River on Monday and Tuesday surpassed all prior floods. He recalled Zeke Norris, aged around sixty, who cannot remember water levels this high. Harkness asserted the river was ten feet higher than in any previous record.
Flood bulletin reports heavy rains since Sunday causing dangerous floods across the Carolinas and eastern Georgia. Savannah River at Augusta expected to reach 38 feet by Wednesday midnight, risking city flooding and cut telegraph links. extensive river rises in Catawba Wateree Pee Dee and eastern North Carolina with record levels. Damage described as enormous with railroads, bridges, roads and crops hit. Oconee Ocmulgee rivers in Georgia also above flood stage and Alabama River to see high water in September.
