Fire destroys church and store on South Mall Street

Early Sunday fire in Abbeville destroyed I C Brown’s general merchandise store on South Main Street and left only the Methodist church walls standing. Community nurse Miss Gossett raised the alarm. delays and equipment issues hindered the response. Brown faced total losses, with stock valued around ten thousand dollars and insurance only fourteen hundred fifty dollars. fire department shortcomings and hydrant maintenance were questioned by officials.

Baby contest at mill resumes tomorrow

Doctors and nurses will resume grading of about 120 babies at the mill school building tomorrow at two o clock. The panel from the state board of health and local medical staff will conduct the tests as the public is invited to observe and learn about infant care.

Rev and Mrs H W Pratt attended Mrs C A Haigler's funeral in Abbeville at the family's request Mr Pratt conducted the Presbyterian Church service on Sunday. They stayed with J D Kerr and left Monday for Savannah where Mrs Pratt resumes her work after a vacation.

No Sugar Rationing Now Says Palmer

Washington reports no sugar rationing will be enacted. A W Riley special assistant to Attorney General Palmer announced that conservation will be urged but the country will not be placed on a national basis. Canners are pleased with current handling. Riley will oversee the sugar situation from New York after a conference with Palmer and Figg.

Senator Glass backs McAdoo despite decision to withdraw

Senator Glass told the Associated Press he still favors William G. McAdoo’s nomination by the Democratic party for president even though McAdoo declined to have his name presented at the national convention. Glass added he represents a region relied on for electoral votes, not the candidate himself.

Rumors Claim German Emperor Wounded at Doorn Castle

Doorn Holland June 18 persistent rumors say a Belgian with a forged pass gained entry to Doorn Castle and assaulted the former German Emperor, injuring his jaw. The Belgian was arrested but confirmation of the event remains uncertain.

Well Known Editor Dead and Professor Henry Dies

Edwin J. Heath longtime editor of The Fourth Estate and prominent New York newspaper man died last night at his home. Professor and Mrs D H Henry of Boston, mourning his passing in Richmond Hills, with many friends sending condolences. He was born December 22, 1864 in New Hampshire and will be interred there.

Fire Hits Church and Nearby Homes In Storm

A Methodist church and adjacent buildings suffered major damage from a Sunday morning fire. The church carried 1500 dollars in insurance. only the pulpit, chairs, and organ survived. Bystanders say rain helped save nearby dwellings and the Community house across the street. Critics target the fire department for a poor response.
