Rear Admiral Gleaves says the United States will fight beside the British Navy in a high seas engagement with the German fleet. He cites a large U S battleship force, about 19 000 officers and 400 000 men, and 150 ships with 35 000 to 40 000 sailors, backed by a 1 300 000 000 dollar appropriation.
Robert Brownlee of Due West, with American forces in France, writes home of meeting children who help him learn French, hiking to villages, and finding wine and beer in town shops. He notes beer gardens, rustic benches, and the light drinks common there amid village scenes.
Repeated requests have been received for limited service men to enter the service to be engaged in spruce production work for aeroplanes. Desires include locomotive engineers firemen railroad foremen wooden bridge carpenters and many other railroad and labor positions.
Mrs Kate L Bryan of Abbeville and Greenville died after a brief illness and was buried in Columbia. Born 1860 in Abbeville, she married R Berkeley Bryan in 1890. Survived by three children Catherine McGregor, Richard Lathan Bryan, and James Lomax Bryan, plus siblings John Calhoun Lomax, Maude L McGregor, and Wm Alston Pringle.
Mrs. J. M. Wilkinson of Abbeville visits her son Dr. Alvin Wilkinson at Camp Sevier. She proudly has four sons serving Uncle Sam: one at Sevier, two with the expeditionary forces in France, and another at Clemson College in training. She bears the burden with duty and pride to help whip the Kaiser.
Mrs Mary Kennedy fell last Friday breaking an arm and spraining an ankle. She was taken to Chester on Saturday for treatment with friends hoping for a quick recovery.
Mrs Fannie Haddon traveled to Atlanta last week for her son Dr Chal mers Haddon's graduation from Southern Dental College. She also visited the Piedmont Hotel and enjoyed the sights of the city during her stay.
South Carolina lags in per capita purchases of War Savings Stamps and must pledge at least 20 million dollars during the year. June is set aside for an intensive campaign urging residents to invest and raise the state’s standing before the November elections.
Washington reports American shipyards set a new world record in destroyer construction with the Ward launched at Mare Island just 17.5 days after keel lay, beating prewar norms of eleven months. The Tuckahoe holds merchant ship launch time, 27 days after keel, with Ward 84 percent complete at launch. Secretary Daniels notes wartime aims cut destroyer build time to about five months. Naval Constructor H M Gleason led Ward’s project. Congress opens summer tax hearings next week with McAdoo and Roper as first witnesses seeking a revenue bill to raise 7 to 8 billion dollars for next year’s war costs. The $12 billion army appropriation passes the House. Senate action and other measures follow as recess ideas surface.
Col LaRoque a state bank examiner offers his services to the YMCA and plans to travel to France to assist soldiers. He attended the Veterans Reunion in Abbeville in May where his uniform drew attention from sponsors and veterans.
Miss Etta Allen will depart from her New Jersey home Friday after a year of teaching at the Graded school. She has earned praise from patrons for her bright vivacious manner and leaves many warm friends wishing her happiness in her future life.
Mrs. C E Williamson hosts her sister Miss Powell of Pansy Georgia as a stately brunette visitor who is winning many friends during her stay in town.
The Book Club plans a Wednesday morning meeting at ten thirty with Mrs. L C Parker. The Abbeville Chapter D A B will meet Wednesday at 6 pm in the chapter rooms to elect officers. Miss Julia Jay visited Abbeville with Mrs Fannie Haddon and joined Mrs Haddon in Atlanta for Dr Chalmer Haddon’s graduation. Mr H M Hill of Antreville was in town on business. Board of Education members urged increases for about 500 grade school teachers’ salaries by five to seven dollars monthly before the General Council finance committee. J D Lewis, who owns property near Antreville, visited the city last Saturday.
Roy Gilleland Jr celebrated his fourth birthday Friday afternoon with about fifty friends. Children enjoyed various amusements then were invited to the dining room where pink and white ice cream cakes candies and fruits were served. Punch was served throughout the event.
Washington June 1 An order to commandeer virtually the entire cotton output of the United States was anticipated by cotton industry leaders. The War Industries Board did not deny such a step, and John Scott of Chicago was named textile administrator of cotton fabrics, signaling the move toward compulsory requisition. After commandeering, less essential industries may be taken to meet government needs.
Miss Madge McLesky and Corporal Russell Wade were married Saturday night at the Baptist Parsonage by Rev. Ged. W. Swope. The bride’s sister Miss Myrtle McLesky and friend Miss Mary Aiken attended. Wade, from Norfolk, Va., stationed at Camp McClellan, is to ship overseas. Mrs Wade will join him in Anniston after the ceremony.
Antreville resident L. P. Harkness, 70, was buried at Shiloh church last Sunday noon in Masonic funeral services led by Rev. Martin. Survived by his wife, he was described as a useful, well liked citizen, and local sympathy was extended to Mrs. Harkness.
Allied forces across the Somme and Marne fronts push back German advances near Chateau Thierry and Rheims. French and British units regain villages and hold lines while German forays toward Paris and across the Marne face strong resistance. Italian front shows only modest artillery activity and Paris sustains air raids with several injuries reported.
A varied program was presented at the regular Sunday service under the guidance of Ms J C Ellis and committee. Children sang and recited well while the church was attractively decorated. A large congregation attended to encourage the children and boost contributions.
Lieut. Davis of Waycross Georgia was a visitor in the city last week, staying briefly and touring local sites.
