German forces press from Soissons toward Rheims and the Aisne region, claiming 25 000 prisoners including a French and a British general. Soissons western environs hold against the drive as Cantigny and Toul sector sees American gains and heavy fighting.
Reverend R. T. Blackford will hold a Sunday afternoon service at 4 30 in the Episcopal church. He is stationed at Camp Vier and is the brother of Reverend Bler Blackford who until recently served as rector here.
Invitations arrived in Abbeville for the closing exercises of the Southern Dental College in Atlanta naming Chalmers D. Haddon among the graduates. Local Red Cross women presented Dr Verchott a set of knitted garments as he left for the army. Daughters of the Confederacy praised the young doctor and his high spirits as he begins the journey with comfort and optimism.
Washington May 28 One union express company for the United States formed by agreement among Mc Adoo and the Adams American Wells Fargo Southern companies. A new private corporation with capital over 30 million to be called the Federal Express Company. George C Taylor named head. After July 1 shippers will direct shipments by express regardless of company as names disappear from wagons stations and cars. The express carrying agency will operate privately under contract to turn over 50 1 4 percent of gross revenues to the railroads for transportation privileges. Western Great Northern and Northern may join later.
Dr. George H. Denny, president of the University of Alabama, told the Alabama Alumni Association commencement crowd in Packard, TaD To PACKERS University, Ala., that packers seek profits by buying Southern food and selling it back at high markups. He heads the cotton seed division of the Federal Food Administration under Hoover, praising anti profiteering and noting Washington efforts and wartime mobilization with 200,000 American troops sent to France in May.
All young men who have become twenty-one since the last registration or who will turn 21 before June 5, 1918 must register on that date. Applicants will appear before the Abbeville County Board of Registration in the Clerk of Court J L Perrin’s office. Heavy penalties follow a failure to register.
The Shipping Board unveils a plan to honor shipyard and allied industry workers with flags service badges and distinguished conduct medals. A War Badge Board led by Rear Admiral Pletcher will award monthly honors, with top yards earning permanent flags. President Wilson urges national thrift day on June 28 and calls for voluntary war savings investments.
Washington May 28 announces the Shipping Board completed ten steel vessels totaling 63 486 tons for the week. Average daily output was 9 069 tons. Eighteen launches occurred, fifteen steel and three wooden, with eighteen requisitioned or contracted ships. Monthly launching average reaches two daily totaling 109 700 tons.
Mrs. W. P. Kennedy was taken to Thester on Wednesday for an appendicitis operation. The latest news reports the operation successful and the patient doing well. She was accompanied by her mother Mrs. M. T. Coleman.
Mr H S Dellinger died Monday afternoon May 27 1918 at his son C H Dellinger’s Atlanta home. He was 82 and survived by two sons, two brothers, a sister, and had lived in Abbeville eight years. Body went to Iron Station for funeral and burial.
A 32 man detachment left for Camp Jackson on Wednesday May 29 1918. Leaders Arthur Link and Fred Ficquett organized the squad. Ladies of the Canteen served refreshments and flowers while Dr Swope and Rev Clotfelter offered greetings. The group included Robert Arthur Lik James John Parker and many others.
News from Abbeville confirms Lieutenant Preston B Speed and Lieutenant W D Wilkinson, both of the 118th, have safely reached overseas duty. Speed, a Border veteran, is eager to join the fight as Wilkinson, grandson of J M Wilkinson, honors a family with prior Mexican War service.
Washington May 25 The Senate military affairs committee today formally offered a favorable report on Senator Reed's resolution providing for an increase in the army of 3,000,000. No action was taken. L. C. Haskell attended Clemson Commencement to witness Allen Haskell graduate.
In Columbia South Carolina on May 29 1818 a single story wooden ward at the State Hospital for the Insane burned at 3 am killing seventeen patients and injuring others. An inquest found no blame to staff with the fire possibly starting from defective insulation of electric wiring. The ward housed 46 patients and was among the oldest buildings on the grounds. The roof was covered with three ply paper.
Abbeville County contributions reach 19446.00 with Dus West and Donalds absent. Abbeville Chapter ARC plus McCormick Willington and Mt Carmel auxiliaries total 18100.00. Thanks extended to committee members and the colored churches for support. officials praise volunteers and cooperation.
