Geddes Voices War Opposition and League of English Speaking Peoples

Sir Auckland Geddes, British ambassador to the United States, told centennial Virginia exercises in Charlottesville that war between England and America is impossible and expressed support for a league of all English speaking peoples to foster world peace. Archibald Coolidge and other dignitaries spoke on Jeffersonian heritage, democracy, and postwar unity as centennial events concluded with a Monticello pilgrimage and a Confederate-era rotunda dinner.

Representative Keller Proposes Four Revenue Law Amendments

Washington June 2 Representative Keller Republican Minnesota introduced four amendments to revenue laws, sponsored by committees of manufacturers merchants federal taxation and farmers tax league. Proposals include repealing most taxes except tobacco spirits margarine habit forming drugs and child labor products, and repealing the excess profits tax and corporate income tax. The plan also redefines earned versus unearned income, taxes estates from 20 000 to over 100 000 000, and imposes a 1 percent land value tax above 10 000 with farm exemptions. The amendments aim to fund the budget and establish a debt sinking fund.

Medical College of South Carolina Commencement Held in Charleston

Dr Reed Smith of the University of South Carolina gave the annual address at the Medical College of South Carolina exercises in Charleston. Miss Gwen Bristow Wins Gold Medal at Anderson College

Miss Gwen Bristow, a former student at Anderson College, received a gold medal at last night’s commencement for writing the best English composition in the college magazine during the year. The award was decided by a committee of three English professors from other colleges.

Winthrop College on June 2 elected Dr G T Pugh former president of Columbia College as bursar to cover 150 more students next year. Dr Margaret Whitesides was named resident physician and Miss Lula O Andrews dean of women. Trustees discussed funds for additional teachers and approved a plan with the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association for old age annuities for faculty and staff.

Funeral Services Held Yesterday for Joseph E. Jones

The funeral of Joseph E. Jones, former Abbeville County treasurer, was held yesterday at the Methodist church. Rev. Peele officiated, with burial at Long Cane cemetery. Pallbearers included W. A. Calvert and others. honorary pallbearers were Abbeville County officials. Relatives traveled from Columbia Spartanburg Charleston Greenwood to attend.
