J E Jones Leads In Four Cornered County Treasurer Race

J E Jones topped a four candidate race in Abbeville and the county with 480 votes out of 893. George C Douglass ranked second with 271, R C Wilson third with 115, and E C Horton fourth with 77. A second primary is set for Saturday June 14 as the race remains undecided. The city and county vote was light and farmers’ crop prospects may influence turnout.

Maj R B Cheatham to Arrive in New York Today

Mrs R B Cheatham received a radio message from Major R B Cheatham of the U S S Troy stating he would land in Hoboken New Jersey Tuesday June 3 and that he is well. He served with the 41st Infantry 38th Division and saw action on the Western front. Before enlistment he was superintendent of the Abbeville Schools.

Eighty First Lads Homeward Bound From Minnesota

Lieut Samuel L Latimer Jr mails word to his parents that he has sailed on the battleship Minnesota and expects to reach Newport News about June 6. He belongs to the Piet Hened and Sixteenth Field Artillery of the Eighty first Division. South Carolinians serve in this regiment under Brig Gen Andrew Moses now commanding the 156th Field Artillery. The regimental staff includes Col Russell P Reeder and Capt C P Richardson of Greenville.

Clemson College scholarship exam set for Abbeville County

A four year Clemson College scholarship will be vacant in Abbeville County this summer with four competitive exams to be held by County Superintendent W J Evans on July 11 at 9 a m. The scholarship includes aid from the U S Government and covers agricultural course options. J M Alston of Pettigrew lies critically ill at home.

Trouble Over Dog Costs Two Lives in Allendale

In Allendale County near Allendale and Cohen's Bluff, J W Hoge and M Marley killed each other after a dog bite led Hoge to shoot the dog and Marley to fire an automatic shotgun. Hoge died at the scene. Marley died soon after. An inquest is expected tomorrow.

Abbeville Council Approves StreetPaving Financing Plan

The Abbeville city council passed an ordinance letting property owners on certain streets decide to pay half the paving cost. Petitions signed by two thirds justify levying costs on all owners. Signatories get 30 days to pay or issue notes, with city certificates issued and 6 percent interest. Ten year repayment based on per foot cost.

Negro Arrested for County Jail Shooting at Campfield Church

Otto Lindsey, a Negro, was jailed Monday by Sheriff Burts and Deputy Cann after a Sunday afternoon shooting at Campfield Church. Lindsey, returning from abroad, fired five times at Jef Aiken, wounding his arm. authorities found him hiding beneath an old house near the church.

Antreville residents approved increasing the school tax to 8 mills from 4. The measure calls for a seven month school year and guarantees state support, with tax collection to fund education across all districts if funds fall short.

Speeding fine levied in May court for Dewey Campbell

Dewey Campbell was tried in May or's court Monday morning and fined for speeding on Sunday afternoon. The fine was $2.50 and was imposed despite Campbell's protest that his machine could not run slower than 25 miles per hour without stalling.
