Chicago May 28, Democratic National Committee leaders described the peace treaty and the league covenant as the decisive issue for the 1920 campaign. Chairman Homer Cummings announced an aggressive plan while urging swift ratification by the Senate and highlighting women voters and party achievements.
Ella May Tribble of Anderson has been elected to teach at the Cotton Mill school for the year 1919. Tribble previously taught at the Ox Mill in Anderson for four years.
Capt J D Pulp elected superintendent of Abbeville City Schools accepts the position and cifes his plan. He is at the University of London taking a special course and is a graduate of Presbyterian College of Clinton. He has six years as superintendent including Winnsboro and Fort Mill. The officer served overseas with the 322nd infantry and holds post graduate work at Columbia University. He is married with two children.
The John son place, a 423 acre highly desired farm property, was sold to E Williamson and Dr S G Thomson through the Dixie Land Company, highlighting brisk market activity in town and country real estate and the readiness of buyers and sellers.
Secretary Daniels told the House naval affairs committee that the 1919 three year program to build ten battleships and ten battle cruisers should be wiped off the slate. He argued the world’s move toward universal peace and the League of Nations makes naval supremacy unnecessary and urged the United States to set a precedent by halting large new ship construction.
Berlin voters discuss the treasurer contest amid war finance and military terms. The Pan German Gazette predicts a tight race between two leaders with a likely win near 1100 votes. Caroline Graves returns to Lowndesville from Washington as her Abbeville friends note her war department position.
Postmasters announce that on July 1 the first class postage reverts to the pre November 2, 1917 rate of 2 cents per ounce or fraction, with postal cards and postcards at 1 cent each. The public is urged to note the return to the old rate structure.
T Gordon White adds two carloads of cattle to the Greenwood Market in Greenwood on Wednesday for 11 cents a pound, up two cents from Abbeville price. The stock, owned by Gordon White Ollie Watson and J W Ferguson, comprised Herefords and mixed lots.
The Abbeville schools have chosen Miss Mary Burton of Laurens, Miss Rachel Whisenant of Blacksburg, Miss Eusie Lown of New Brookland, and Miss Sallie F. Hart of Darlington to teach in the coming academic year.
The secretary of state issued a commission to eight petitioners to incorporate a $100 000 Kentucky Carolina Oil Company with main office in McCormick. Subscriptions open, stock to be taken, land near Blowing Green Warren County KY to begin operations. A. Hill and his sons visited Carwile's to talk about the Kissel car and fried chicken.
A test of the new fire engine at the Cotton Mill pool ended abruptly when the centrifigal pump bearings heated, forcing a halt before the final evaluation. Inspector Shannon of the Southeastern Fire Insurance Underwriters Association nearly approved the machine before the setback. Mayor Mars and Seagrave Company arranged immediate shipment of a new pump, with another test to follow once it arrives.
Brest May 29 All the troops of the Eighty first Wild Cat division are homeward bound. Spartanburg May 27 last contingents nail this incoming State Sunday school convention in Florence South Carolina June 3 4 will be a Victory convention with Dr Watson B Duncan opening. Delegates will register and be assigned homes. a one dollar fee funds expenses. Florence offers good rail access and anticipates large attendance of pastors teachers and pupils for a three day program.
Work on the Abbeville County Memorial Hospital will commence in two weeks. A seven member board of managers will be elected at the next stockholders meeting. Committees named to select members and study control and management reported. Plans include street improvements and church relocation discussions with local trustees. A further stockholders meeting will be held soon.
Misses Adams received a telegram yesterday from Private Sam Adams a colonel in Abbeville stating his arrival from overseas and wired from Grand Central Hospital New York indicating illness.
The federal grand jury in Anderson reported no bill in the case against George Belcher, charged with distilling. Deputies previously seized a home made still at Belcher’s residence on the WFP Radcliff plantation near Gilgal, destroying about a peck of mash. The jury concluded there was not enough to indict.
Judge Frank B. Gary of the Eighth Judicial Circuit attends the Georgia-South Carolina Bar Association sessions in Savannah this year, joining Georgia lawyers for the meeting and discussions.
The Ladies Aid Society of the Baptist church will hold its regular monthly meeting in the church parlor at 6 o'clock Monday afternoon. Talent money collected previously will be gathered at this meeting. All members are urged to attend.
Germany presents counter proposals to the Versailles peace treaty. The unofficial summary notes calls for disarmament of battleships with some mercantile fleet restoration, no territorial changes without population consultation, and rejection of claims on Silesia and East and West Prussia. It proposes a free Danzig port, neutral Vishtul river, withdrawal from occupied areas within six months, and colonial administration under League principles if the League exists. Germany offers 100 billion marks gold by 1926 and annual payments thereafter, but argues compensation is invalid and criticizes the League of Nations as inadequate and a continuation of old alliances.
Harry Cannon purchased from Annie C Harris the house and lot at the corner of Cherry and Poplar Street. He plans to improve and convert the property into an elegant residence.
