Still Taken Near Hoea Path In Cypress Plantations

Sheriff Burts and Deputy Cann captured a copper still on the J R Pruitt plantation near Keowee church. Investigators traced tracks to Pruitt’s neighbors and found mash barrels and the still in a residence. J A Ramsey was arrested in Honey Path with soldering tools. other suspects Baylus Evans Russell Evans and Robert Head were being sought.

Bread loaf price cut to twelve cents in Cleveland

A large Cleveland grocery chain reduced the price of a 24 ounce loaf from 14 to 12 cents today, citing fuel price declines. The reduction, amounting to 2 cents, applies across its many stores in the city.

Washington May 8 1921 over a billion dollars are available for road building and maintenance in the United States with about 550 million to be expended in 1921. State highway bonds totaling roughly 538.8 million have been authorized in the last three years.

Abbeville High downed Belton 31 to 0 on Rosenberg Field in the last game of the season. Allen Long Jimmie Harris Billie Long and Foster Barnwell scored and Billie Long added a 25 yard field goal the first of the season on the local field. The town praises the team and coaches as Abbeville eyes next year’s championship push in South Carolina.

License New Cars December 13 For 1921

The state highway department announced that auto registrations for 1921 begin December 13. One hundred forty seven thousand six hundred license plates were ordered for next year, up from ninety nine thousand in 1920. Fees range from 6 dollars for cars under 2000 pounds to 200 dollars for trucks over four tons with solid tires. Police officer C A Coward, in charge of enforcement, is in Columbia.

Harding Pleased With His Journey Aboard Pastores

President-Elect Harding told friends aboard the steamer Pastores that his canal zone visit yielded practical knowledge on canal operations and strengthened Panama-U.S. ties. The ship, sailing from Cristobal to Jamaica, faced rough seas but improved weather today with 60 other passengers aboard.

Greenwood County Faces Multimillion Dollar Cotton Loss

The decline in cotton price from forty to fifteen cents would cost Greenwood County about 5 million dollars. If the crop would have reached 8 million dollars at previous prices, the county could see a loss of 3 to 5 million depending on final yields and prices. Government figures show 30,372 bales ginned by November 4, compared with 29,064 last year.

Burial of Augustus Morton

Augustus Morton son of Mrs. Willie Moore Morton of Greenville South Carolina died in Clinton after taking poison. His body was brought to Abbeville for burial at Long Cane after short services at R. M. Hill’s home. He was 21 and had long suffered illness including a recent operation at Johns Hopkins. He worked as a cartoonist for Jacobs Company in Clinton. He is survived by his mother and three brothers.

Military rule declared in Mingo County by Gov Cornwell

Gov John J. Cornwell declares Mingo County under military regulation amid a miners strike. Col Herman Hall leads federal troops from Camp Sherman, forbidding public assemblies except church meetings and restricting possession of firearms and explosives. Businesses may remain open as order is sought and mines are guarded.

Cotton Strength Continues Rise Pressure Price Gains

After a 30 point gain yesterday the market advanced again today with December futures rising from 15.45 to 16.15. New York spots gained 25 points to 16.00 and Abbeville reported a one point rise. Good cotton sold at 16 cents as demand grows and telegraphic activity remains encouraging.
