Our Appointment With the Major in New York
KRAINARD and I, after shopping near headquarters, rush to meet the major as Hamilton and Clayne arrive in refined cavalry dress. The lieutenant delays us with drill and news that the Thirty-eighth Cavalry will be sent to the regiment that evening. We face grim farewells, telegraph families, endure Brainard’s return, and depart through Broadway toward uncertain war ahead.

In Camp Again We Meet Recruits and Old Fighters
I travel south with squads of new recruits and meet veterans of the Nivy-ninth. The train shows mixed men, some desert or bounty seekers, and a few seasoned Light Brigade survivors. Camp life proves dull and discouraging as we face rough discipline and harsh labor before any drill or welcome.

Tillman recollections of Josh Ashley and a carriage ride
Florence Times reports a tale of political banter about Hon. Josh Ashley once a Tillmanite. A crowd once pulled Tillman in a carriage to a hotel in Anderson, while Ashley’s current stance and memory sparked humor. The story unfolds as spectators recall changing loyalties and a chuckled retelling.
