Prisoners in a British fort in a perilous escape tale

The narrator and D'ri flee a wrecked vessel and ride a frightened horse through villages, narrowly avoid capture, and are recaptured and imprisoned in a British fort. They face a candlelit dungeon, a tense upstairs seating in a lordship’s drawing room, and a reunion with Louison Louise and the baroness amid mounting danger.

Jefferson Bible sparks senate requests and copy race

The Jefferson Bible once stored at the Smithsonian has triggered a flood of requests from senators and the public after being photographed and reprinted. An ad in a well known magazine offered it free if readers petition a senator, prompting mass inquiries and a plan to print more copies. Also recounted is a Fenian raid anecdote about Colonel Albert Clarke and his hat taking bullet holes while he escaped danger.

York County Distillery Case in United States Court

In Columbia a lengthy trial over McCarver and Mrs. Stewart and the Lowery Jubilee distillery near the North Carolina line ended without success for federal and state prosecutors. Jurors found whisky sold there came from a nearby barroom on the North Carolina side, halting seizure efforts. Stewart won state and federal rulings, while witnesses testified to illicit purchases and a controversial setup around Jubilee.

Wary notes on tariffs and trusts hint at varied fallout

A clipped column surveys tariff promises, trust actions, and political takes. General Wood comments on Filipino levies, Gov Vardaman’s stance on whitecaps, and clerical critics of Star Spangled Banner. Lawson battles coal and copper interests while football salaries outpace academia. The piece riffs on press credibility, a railroad Philippines bill, and a Havana cattle monopoly suit.
