Losses included eleven horses and cattle, two jewels, fodder and peas, while praise and thanks went to rescuers led by Mr. Rash.
The Northeastern railroad is in perfect order from Charleston to Florence. The Wilmington and Manchester line is repaired and trains run on schedule. Spartanburg and Union trains operate daily from Spartanburg to Shelton. Daily stages will run from Fairfield Districts to a Charlotte railroad point at Blackstocks or Winnsboro, to be announced.
The Wilmington Journal reports the President declined an intelligent gentleman's proposal to start a newspaper supporting his administration. He thanked the proposer but said he wants independent press freedom to condemn or approve government actions without being bound to a pro administration organ.
