Wife fires three shots at husband in Yerington scene
In Yerington, Mrs Bateman of Thompson fired three shots from a .32 Colt automatic at her husband in front of the Owl saloon. One bullet tore through a transom, another through a window of the Eagle saloon, the third went upward. Night Watchman Sommers arrested them after Bateman restrained his wife. Bateman released, wife bailed. she pleaded guilty later to using a deadly weapon and paid a $30 fine plus costs.

Death of Mrs. Hyer in San Francisco
Mrs J A Weyer of Ludwig died in San Francisco on Saturday September 29 after failing health and a planned treatment at lower altitude. Heart disease listed as cause. she was 38 and born in California. Burial occurred October 2 in San Francisco. She leaves a husband and two children aged 3 and 6, plus her mother, two sisters, and two brothers in California. The Hyer family were well known in Nevada where Mr Hyer worked for Nevada Douglas Co. The husband returned to Ludwig midweek, leaving the children with relatives.

First Trial Pull with Caterpillar at Yerington
Ambro Rosaschi conducted the Caterpillar 45 test pull loading 15 000 feet of lumber and 16 000 shingles on three wagons, totaling about 15 tons. The tractor easily hauled the load to the road before noon and will aid future farm and home construction on his ranch 25 miles south of the city. The project supports a new dwelling near the present house and marks progress in local development. Leonard William Calling, Rev and Mrs J L Calling’s son, passed the California State Optometry exam, while Dr Lo W Collins, longtime Pasadena resident, is noted in regional recollections.

Lyon County Red Cross elects officers at annual meeting
The Lyon County Chapter of the American Red Cross held its regular annual meeting on Tuesday evening October 9 in the court room. Officers elected were ILS Pohe as chairman Miss Mildred Whitman as vice chairwoman Mrs G Foster as secretary and Lyon County Bank as treasurer with W V Churchyard acting. The executive board will be formed soon with twenty members from county auxiliaries. The campaign has boosted local membership to about 9 members. A showing feature, The Battle of Tanks, will be screened November 20 at the Rink Theatre with proceeds supporting the Red Cross gas work for the troops at the front.

Mail pouch stolen with ten thousand dollars recovered later
On October 1 a mail bag arrived in Mason at 2:50 am and was rifled of registered mail including a $10,000 cash parcel for Mason Valley Bank. The pouch was taken from the baggage room after the door was locked, a break in the ticket room noted, and the pouch later found with mutilated mail in an ore chute at Thompson Smelter. Investigators have no clues as press time. the bank is insured.

District Court actions settle estates and divorces in Dayton
On October 6 1917 Judge E A Ducker presided in Dayton district court over estates and divorces. Orders approved include sale of real and personal property to the highest bidder for Scott Carnal estate, and summary administration for L J Hurke with appraisers named. Divorces granted include Leona Westphall on cruelty grounds and Crosson versus George F Crosson. Minor cases involve Angela C state v. Angela C plea not guilty to grand larceny and Olga Hebbard divorce and name restoration to Olga Williams. Evidence submissions and depositions are noted for several matters.
