The National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage cites official Michigan figures showing 96 144 vote margin against suffrage, 17 of 83 counties supported it, most of which were wet. The group notes 28 of 33 dry counties voted against suffrage, while 38 of 50 wet counties opposed it as well.
The record shows aggregate results by county dated April 7, 1913. Emmet, Josco, Huron, Jackson, Tuscola and Calhoun opposed prohibition by 3,149 while backing against woman suffrage by 5,707. Smaller sparsely populated counties favored woman suffrage, notably in the Upper Peninsula and backwoods Lower Peninsula regions.
Frank Ables a river company teamster from Deeth was struck by lightning twenty eight miles north of Deeth last Friday afternoon. He drove four mules and led two when the bolt killed four animals and instantly felled Ables. A nearby man was knocked down and stunned along with two mules, while two lead mules and two wheel mules survived uninjured. Elko Free Press reports the odd accident.
