The Reno State Fair and Track Meet runs September 22 to 27 with $5,000 in purses for races. Lyon County urged a strong exhibit of agriculture, livestock, and copper mineral specimens, touting garden produce and first prize potential to attract state and national attention.

A Thursday around 1 pm cloudburst hit the upper valley near Wellington Springs and Pine Grove Hills. Water rushed over Stickney and Cross ridges in torrents, spreading across flat country but causing no major damage. Mr. Stickney reports losing a horse tied down and calls it the greatest freshet he recalls.

A storm near Mason Valley Canyon bursts a large Copper Belt oil tank spilling about 14 500 gallons. Oil overflow fouls the river and kills fish as farmers report ditches filled with the oily water. Total damage to Copper Belt Co. estimated between 700 and 800 dollars.
A Pueblo warrant targets Neil McGee for abandoning his wife and children. Deputy Guthrie arrested him, and he remains jailed awaiting Colorado officer arrival. McGee, a known organizer in Rawhide and other mining camps, may contest extradition as an officer leaves Colorado for Verrington to secure him.
Last Sunday Thompson team dominated Tonapal nine 2 to 1 as champions. They boast an undefeated season with no losses, claim they can defeat any nine in the state for a fair wager. Ren was to join but Reno manager called off the game. Tonapal dusts off the challenge ready for next match.
An assay review finds 1 to 2 thousand tons of tailings at the Wheeler mill on the West Walker River. Porter has tested material in a small tank and plans to add larger tanks to increase handling speed. The run of material could reach about ten tons per day.
The disputes among the men and the Erie and other eastern roads will likely see the claims first heard by the board. After adjustment, the company may submit grievances for board action. Arbitration work should begin promptly to test the Newland act’s benefits.
Dr. Gridley filed against William Ruggles in Wabuska justice court this week. Attorney Pilkington went to Wabuska yesterday and recovered a judgment amount in favor of the client.

Nevada Douglas and Smith Valley Mines report ongoing ore shipments and promising development. President Adams expected to assess work and plan further shipping while potential mergers circulate around Nevada Douglas and Mason Valley.
A vacancy in the Wabuska postoffice is contemplated with an examination for the life appointment to be held in Carson on August 23. The postmaster’s last year’s compensation was 402 dollars. Application forms are obtainable from the stamster at Wabuske and must be filed with the Commission in Washington DC at least seven days before the examination. Sacramento Visitors report Dr Howard Cameron and wife and Miss Cameron of Sacramento recently visited CW Nagher’s family in Wellington and drove from Wellington to Sacramento for a short outing. The party left Wellington for Crampento Monday afternoon.
A stray horse with saddle marks and a brand on the left hip was found near Wise. The animal is eight years old and may be returned to its owner who is asked to contact Mr. I Wise to recover the horse and settle pasture costs.
Henry Fish formerly of Pine Grove married Miss Trene Brandt of Napa in Santa Cruz California on the 23d of last month. They plan to reside in Oakland California and many friends in this section will extend congratulations.
The week ending July 25, 1913, at Mason Valley smelter reports ore receipts and four carloads of matte shipped. The brief item notes weekly tonnage details and the matte shipment from the smelter.
At 3 30 this morning dense smoke issued from the upper story of the Little Waldorf saloon on Main street. A small chemical engine failed to operate. water from a hydrant saved the building. Loss to owner Dewit Crowinshield is about 150 dollars with no insurance. saloon owner J J Carberry is away and insurance covers any loss. Water damage may affect bar fixtures, liquor stock spared.
A weekend of rain and a Tuesday shower caused heavy runoff in the valley. Roads between the McConnell line and the railroad were badly washed out, and the Bluestone road suffered flood damage from a torrent on the canyon. No damage reported in the northern end.
Jobin O Banion and wife and Mrs Schuyler Lee traveled from Hot Springs on business. Their car caught fire after a stop near McLeod Hill. Quick action by onlookers used sand to extinguish the blaze with little damage. Salty Snyder towed the car to Verington for repairs. O Banion reports rapid hotel work at the Springs, promising a fine caravansary upon completion.
Assessor Pohe notes Lyon county's property value rises to about 6.5 million with significant new property and farm property gains. The trend suggests growth toward 10 million, a declining tax rate, and eventual elimination of indebtedness, positioning Lyon as financially strong among state counties.
J A How AM a prominent mining operator of Goldfield and E H W McMurray of Pittsburg arrived in Yerington on Tuesday to inspect the copper mining district. They were considerably impressed and may become interested. They departed yesterday with Mr Trowlahan bound for Washington and Mr McMurray for Pittsburg.
A Tuesday evening electric storm disrupted the Truckee River Power Co. line between Reno and the local area, leaving the town in darkness for an hour or more. Power was restored before 1 o clock, prompting appreciation for electric light over coal oil.
A Tuesday afternoon lightning strike damaged a regulator and small transformers at Bluestone, burning out equipment and causing a transformer to leak about 30 gallons of oil. The Nevada-Douglas mine shut down for the night. A line fault near Virwini City left Yeringine without lights for over an hour.
Mr Thomas, manager of a telephone line company, is in Fallon with his family to supervise the construction of a connecting line between Fallon and Mason Valley. He states the project will enhance direct talking facilities between Fallon and Mason Valley via his company’s lines.
In Edko County farmers and stockmen unite against cattle rustlers offering rewards for conviction. They report many cattle rustled and horses stolen and shipped out of state. Twenty five firms offer rewards from fifty to three hundred dollars for capturing the thieves.
A county fair group held a Thursday night gathering to launch a local track and fall fair. O H Sonne chaired, J G Kaufman named treasurer, and a three member committee was formed to pursue incorporation. Ground is on Bridge street just outside city limits and $4000 plus land and labor have been pledged. The association expects state funds and aims for a state fair aligned schedule with Fallon and Lyon County crowds.
Mrs French and grandchildren stay at Sparks while heavy showers strike the community. Mrs Powers recovers from illness after Tuesday night, and several residents traveled to Carson. Virden reports a large ore milling and expects a yellow metal supply. Victoria Marchi swallowed a needle with no ill effects yet. Legris has recovered from illness enough to move about. Browmanci attends in Virginia. G Hamilton and son C drove from Reno in a new Reo. Elva Colquhoun arrived from Reno after attending Heald’s Business College.
Lost or stolen from Warren ranch Mason Valley near Pt Conway at Sweetwater two brown mares and foal plus a brown gelding branded 76 on left hip, age about nine years, weight 1200 to 1300 pounds. Henry Baker ranch also reports a similar brown horse taken about May 30 1913. Liberal reward for information or return.
Water Court recesses for ten days as Lozano and his family depart by train to Reno. Attorneys for interested parties will testify, Miller and Lux reportedly propose a compromise to speed government action on the storage proposition.
W D Magli a known merchant of Whitemound Wis bought a stock of Chamberlains medicines to supply customers.
