Winds Hamper Yakima Valley Honey Harvest Record
Bees in about 40 000 colonies produced 80 000 pounds of honey this season due to strong winds and lack of favorable forage. In 1908 similar colonies yielded 200 000 pounds, a peak not matched this year. Growers blame mid summer winds and reduced honey materials. They protest bee tax assessments of 1.25 per colony and seek state board relief. Average per colony is about 20 pounds. honey price ranges 2.25 to 3.25 per case.
