Drakesboro Kentucky February 1. Sixteen bodies recovered ten rescued and 265 to sixty miners still entombed in the Browder mine after a gas explosion. Death toll could reach 380 with rescuers battling gas and slate falls while 100 men were in the mine at the time.
Work resumed at the St Paul mine after removing a hermetic seal that trapped two months of noxious gases. Spectators, mostly widows, watched as Mine Expert Webb explored 650 feet underground to sample gases. Officials warned of potential riots as bodies are recovered and the region braces for delays and danger.
PRIMEFPO Colo Feb 1 1907 9 o clock tonight check of bodies recovered from the Colorado Fuel and Iron mine disaster shows 47 removed leaving 32 still in the workings. A large force digs graves while tomorrow bodies will be taken to Trinidad for burial. A survivor attributes the explosion to fire damp caused by possible miner carelessness. Officials withhold statement pending mine clearance.
J J Hill argues the high cost of living mostly stems from household choice urging housewives to shop at markets and learn prices. He denies industrial unease toward corporations and calls the stock market mood hysteria while blaming overreaching household budgets.
W N Irish outlines a plan approved by the Horticultural union to raise about 4000 for deputy fruit inspector salaries until state funds are available. About 100 of 600 commercial fruit growers would back the plan, each pledging around 40 to banks to advance the money and protect banks. Mr Irish to interview bankers to push the proposal forward.
Cincinnati Feb 1 Mrs Stewart Ford may be freed today from the charge of levying blackmail on Charles L Warriner defaulting local treasurer of the Big Four railway. Her attorneys demand dismissal claiming the prosecuting attorney refused to submit a transcript of grand jury evidence. A decision will be rendered tomorrow. Warriner, in convict garb under cross examination, described his relation with Mrs Ford as the trial continued.
A Parker superior court jury valued eleven acre right of way of Purdy J. Flint ranch at 5050 including damages to irrigation, buildings and an old orchard. The strip over a mile long splits the property, shifting irrigation lines and necessitating removal of structures. Additional right of way cases, including Henry H. Allen and E O Keck ranches, were mentioned with Keck likely settled without suit.
John S. McMechan of North Yakima shows a 13 inch long potato weighing 3 pounds 2 ounces in Iowa. He says oversized potatoes do not fit ovens and are served mashed, praising Yakima produce. He notes strong demand from railroad diners and a growing western movement amid a hard winter and good finances.
Washington January 31 Representative Knowland denied any Alaska claim. Representative McKinley was absent. Representative Kincaid said he bought his claim in 1998, hired Bal linger to look after interests, calling the matter a business proposition with no impropriety. He declined to name the seller.
Streitz resumes work at the Yakima Valley bank after a bout with illness. He had left duties earlier due to appendicitis followed by tonsillitis, with recovery allowing his return.
Yakima county auditors list officers of several Yakima firms. Wenonah Orchards Develop company names F H Tristram as president M B Harlam as vice president H C Kline as secretary treasurer with H E Schlerf and F H Hess as trustees. Yakima Boom company lists H P Svendsen as president and treasurer William Carson as vice president A E Macartney as secretary. Cascade Lumber company uses the same officers as Wenonah. Yakima Valley Lumber company names H F Cody as president W T Hines as vice president P C Palmer as secretary J G Raichle as treasurer.
W W Robinson of Ellensburg and Seattle gains 100 feet on Yakima Avenue after A A Nicol and M R Galloway pay $16 000 for lot 1 block 270 and $20 000 for lot 1 block 271. Ernest D Fear sells corner and buys another, netting about $8000 on Tuesday. New two story or three story building planned on the corner as West Yakima Avenue grows with North Coast railroad development and Summit View additions priced at $15 500 for six acres.
Head Chief Charles Wesley of the Yakima Indians calls a reservation council at the Watson Homer ranch between Toppenish and Fort Simcoe on Friday February 4. The meeting will address grazing disputes and other government related questions.
Starting in North Yakima on Tuesday afternoon F. M. Well and party of four reached White Bluffs Wednesday morning at 1. The trip usually takes four hours. They faced a snowstorm on the Pattleenake hills and became stuck in mud while Miles for aid. In his valley they swept through a rain storm.
Plans announced for a 63 foot high reclamation dam at Lake Raches raise the lake by 33 feet and store 200 000 acre feet of water to serve the Yakima valley canals. Construction start next year with possible day labor and a Washington contract decision pending. Engineers D C Henry Charles Swigart J F Conway E McCulloh G H Baldwin attended the conference.
W F McNatt of Parker again seeks a saloon license backed by a long signatures list. County commissioners meet March 1 to rule on the petition amid strong temperance opposition. Bridge matters include Mabton bridge extension and bids for road work near East Yakima Avenue and Cowiche canyon with Fasswater road bids opening March 1.

Mrs Carrie Nation and May Mallory fought a five round hair pulling bout in Butte Montana after Nation invaded Malloy’s dance hall in the red light district with a crowd of about 1000. Nation delivered a right punch to Malloy and urged patrons to reform while threatening oil paintings. Burial services were held for J A Abbott by Shaw Sons after burial delay.
Judge Preble postponed the ruling, dismissing the jury until March as the W. McF. Stewart case proceeds with extensive testimony in Outlook involving Cascade Lumber and local businessmen. Motion day is set for next Monday, with further hearings planned through February and into March.
Examinations for census enumerators in Yakima county set for Saturday afternoon February 5. North Yakima tests at Central school building 2 o’clock, conducted by the civil service board. Sunnyside by the postmaster, time and place to be announced. Other exam sites will be Prosser and Ellensburg.
The senate devoted its entire session to the postal savings bank bill with Senator Davis arguing it favors national banks and Senator Smith of Michigan warning it could be a plague rather than a blessing. W. F. Purcell was sworn in as successor to the late Senator Thompson, who left office in December due to illness.
Fred Ammonett, the only white man seized in the Saturday dragnet, was declared not guilty by Justice Hunt after a two hour hearing. Prosecutor Walker Moren led the state’s side, while Attorney Thompson defended, using technicalities to secure the acquittal.
Bids open Friday for a Nob Hill pipe distribution system on the Congdon ditch lateral. T A Noble prepared plans for about 3000 feet of pipe at an estimated cost of 1700 dollars. The nine fountains will feed nine concrete basins with water shared by landowners, not extending across the entire 600 acre area.
Judge R B Milroy plans to start practicing law on his own account after a year with Rigg during Englehart illness. He will work temporarily in Hatfield and Schumach’s office over First National Bank and soon move to a Cabalan block suite. Milroy is a well known elder Yakima County lawyer who once chased Alaska gold but remained devoted to central Washington’s future. Mrs Geo Gandy arrived from East Sound late this week.
