Misunderstood Orders Cause Deadly Train Collision
Two Northern Pacific freight trains collided head on two miles north of the city at 11 30 p m Sunday night. Engineer T R Cooper of Huron N D and Fireman Fred L Cantonwine of Walla Walla were instantly killed. Conductor Chase and several crew members were seriously or badly injured as 33 freight cars and two locomotives were wrecked. The accident stemmed from a mis reading of train locations as No 54 and No 1302 failed to stop at Venus and North Yakima siding respectively, leading to a fatal high speed collision. The wrecking trains cleared the line by Monday midnight and authorities announced an investigation.
