Washington January 1 Chinese victims of the famine in five districts, more than 10,000,000 people, are being kept alive on vegetables and cereals mainly millet seed and beans. The State Department was advised today by Charles R. Crane, American minister to Peking.

French black troops opened fire on mutinous Wrangel Cossacks encamped at Tchatalja, 35 miles northwest of Constantinople, after disarming officers. In Bayonne New Jersey on January 18 an explosion and fire in the Bellows Film plant killed two workers and injured about ten. Fifteen people were inside when the blast shattered windows and started the flames. Two charred bodies were found beside the railroad tracks, one likely a woman, as injured were hospitalized.

Washington Jan 18 lines were drawn for a vote to defeat a re apportionment bill to raise House membership from 436 to 483. Leaders said the measure would be voted down and a status quo plan adopted by a large majority. Many oppose adding 48 seats at 1 600 000 a year amid economy pressures. The plan adds California eight, Michigan two, Ohio two, Connecticut New Jersey North Carolina Texas and Washington one each while Missouri would lose two and Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Mississippi Nebraska Rhode Island and Vermont one each.
Five young robbers masked and armed seized twelve mail pouches from a United States mail truck in Chicago's Union Station yards.
