A crowded, fragmented jumble of local street scenes and brief items. Mentions Gleason directing traffic, Ferd Bader and Mike Mulcahy chatter, firefighting, shop talk, a dairy store opening, and assorted town happenings with many partial names and vague events.
Five new policemen, third class, were appointed at the Township meeting held last Monday afternoon. The officers are Fenty Dunham Anthony Weteraan Frank Miller John Manton and Rodney Romano. Three constables Frank Baremore John Kochek and Leo Grossman were also appointed. Cantano appointed special officer for Reading Company, Cantano to be paid 252 per month. Committeeman Campbell discussed parkland, a World War memorial and a possible gas station purchase.
Twenty two Middlesex Council Knights of Columbus members from Woodbridge toured the K of C retreat house San Alfonso at West End near Asbury Park. Father Turner explained the state wide drive to interest members in the periodic retreat idea and planned days around Labor Day with possible overflow. An early meeting formed a retreat group to recruit new members. Woodbridge shows full participation. The West End retreat schedules daily sermons prayers and meditation with five hours allowed for recreation on the local beach.
Prof John H Love leads a group of principals from Burkneley Monmouth Middlesex and Mercer counties to the conference of supervising principals and helping teachers at Trenton Normal School on Tuesday February 4th. The theme Progressive Public Schools features speakers John George Fred Sickles Edgar F Bursa Dr Charles H Enijet Paul Loner and others.
Lions Club members discussed erecting a triangle at the Rahway Avenue and Green Street intersection similar to another triangle at Meine Street and Rahway Avenue. Mayor William A. Ryan announced talks with the Board of Freeholders about resurfacing Rahway Avenue and urged action. A committee including Mayor Ryan J. J. Dunne and J. Word will press the Freeholders to implement the plan. Nathan Duff announced fourteen by law points and the meeting featured a community sing led by Howard Atillwell.
James Concannon Jr. 15 of 463 Amboy Avenue was hurt Monday when struck by Thomas Smith 258 Green Street while coasting on Barrow Avenue. Concannon had hitched his sled to Sol Dochinger’s car on Smith Street. Dochinger turned right on Green Street unaware of the hitch. Smith carried the injured boy to Dr. B W Hoagland for treatment as police warn against hitching to moving cars.
The Township Committee approved the 1930 budget at first reading with hearings to follow on February 10. Increases noted include interest bonds and police salaries, which rose due to new loans and twelve new police officers, while other items were trimmed to minimal levels by officials and department heads.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Woodbridge Fire Company No 1 will hold a public card party next Wednesday at the fire house on School Street Prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served The committee includes Mrs Albert Hunt chair and several other named members.
At last Monday's township meeting five new patrolmen joined Woodbridge Police, bringing the total to 41 including the chief Patrick W Murphy. Chief Murphy says further promotions are planned, especially for the raffle squad, to meet summer demands and cover the township’s large area.
Frank Cesanyi a 46 year old harness maker and janitor at the Hungarian Reform Hall on School Street died by suicide in his kitchen last Sunday. Police: four gas jets open. wife and four children survive. Cesanyi had faced an arson charge and feared prison. body removed to Grenner's Funeral Home after death at the Hungarian Hall.
Michael Keeter of 180 Broad Street Perth Amboy was knocked down on the corner of Amboy avenue and Green street by a Ford sedan that did not stop. He was not injured and was later taken to police.
Three hundred guests attended the Sewaren School Auditorium opening, with Mrs. Raymond Maller giving the welcome. A mystery play Shall We Join the Ladies by Sir James Barrie, two solo dances, a Ukrainian chorus, and dancing directed by Avramenko and Buwats garnered high praise for staging, pacing, and performance.
Walter Warr urged a summer wading pool for township children at the Rotary Club lunch. He proposed a park site with a volunteer from the club to oversee the project. Hugh M. Tompkins of Pearl Street was welcomed into the Rotary Club by Rev J B Myers. Guests included George J Gordon Perth Amboy James Housel and George Gunodrum Sr South Amboy.
Edward Nelson nine years old of Berkley Street Colonia was bruised last Tuesday when a car driven by Morris Specker of Sunbury Street Minersville Pa struck him while crossing the road on the Lincoln Highway Colonia He was taken to Rahway Memorial Hospital by ambulance and treated by Dr B W Hoagland before being sent home.
The i-yo-pta group of the Camp Fire Girls visited their guardian Mrs. Herbert T. Silbermann who is convalescing from an illness yesterday afternoon.
Bread and rolls valued at 11 dollars were taken from in front of Kozel's store on Rahway Avenue Avenel this morning. The theft was reported to local police by Morris Ulman a baker of 435 Washington Avenue Carteret.
Local resident Mark D. McClain of 89 Grove Avenue Woodbridge announces his candidacy for the School Board election on February 11. A longtime Woodbridge civic and fraternal participant, he pivots to public office while highlighting youth work and aid for needy families. Born in Salt Lake City he is an alumnus of Brown University and has engaged in community welfare during his Woodbridge tenure.
Lewis Carangelo Edward Saulnier and Charles Hausgman pleaded guilty before County Judge John O Kirkpatrick to highway robbery and related charges. They we re committed to the county jail with bonds set at 6000 cash and await grand jury action. Victims Bodnar of Fords and Turek of Sewaren reported being held up in a gray Cadillac within an hour of each other.
The Woodbridge Patrolmen Benevolent Association held its annual dance at the Memorial Building last Wednesday evening. It drew the largest crowd yet, with dancing from 8 PM to 1 AM and two hired orchestras.
Four petitions have been filed for the upcoming Board of Education election to be held on Tuesday February 11. Candidates named include James Filer Turner Howell and C Ensign and Mrs Georgiana Andrews of Kelln who are running for re election.
