Budget Meeting Thursday Sets Tax Relief and Budget Path

The Woodbridge Township Committee approved a resolution offering interest relief on delinquent taxes and authorized accepting township bonds in tax payments. The adjourned budget meeting is set for Thursday February 23 at seven o'clock to discuss bills and measures before proceeding to Trenton.

Sewaren Man Found Dead At Wheel Of Car

Francis Drake aged 50 of 490 Cliff Road Sewaren was found dead in his car at the corner of Green Street and the super-highway shortly after five o clock Monday afternoon. Dr C How ard Rothfuss of Woodbridge observed him slumped with head back and hat half off. Death attributed to heart failure. Coroner E A Finn notified and body taken for further handling. Bandits hold up Woodbridge merchant in late Monday raid

Four youths about eighteen or nineteen robbed J. Zilal of 311 Main Street Woodbridge shortly before seven Monday night taking 25 dollars and cigarettes. Witnesses describe them in gray clothes with guns. police link the gang to an earlier Carteret line slaughter house raid that netted 650 dollars. They fled in an Oldsmobile toward Port Reading after cutting telephone wires.

In a razor close contest with over 2,700 votes cast Filer High Man Neary and Turk fell just behind McClain as Ensign and Filer secured seats at the school board.

Appropriations and School Board Re-Elections in Township

In a tight race, R E Ensign James Filer and Mark D McClain were re-elected to the Township Board of Education as 2,775 ballots set a turnout record. Filer led with 1404 votes, Ensign had 1952, and McClain 1396, with Neary and Turk close behind. Appropriations for current expenses 323000 passed 1005 yes 636 no, repairs 16000 passed 942 655, manual training 910 yes 784 no, and library 200 passed 917 yes 697 no. Voter interest was high with large crowds at the High School polls.

Truck Driver Fatally Hurt In Newark Collision

August Gilmore a 29 year old Newark truck driver was killed when his truck was struck by a car driven by Charles Fredrickson of Union City while Gilmore repaired a light on the vehicle outside Marys Service Station in Avenel. Gilmore suffered a skull fracture and catastrophic injuries. Fredrickson and his wife were taken for hospital treatment. Fredrickson was held on a manslaughter technical charge.

Three Hopelawn Youths Admit Hold-Up

Three Hopelawn youths Paul Nochta Charles Kaplen and Andrew Kopaca were held for the Grand Jury without bail by Judge B W Vogel in police court on a Perth Amboy store holdup charge. Scullian the store manager said two masked men with guns robbed the Butler store on Ford Avenue and Main Street after 7 90 PM Saturday night taking about $30. The suspects were arrested after a Chevrolet sedan was traced through Hopelawn Summit Avenue and the men reportedly confessed.

Five Convicted In Local Hold-Up Case

A Woodbridge jury convicted five men Angelo Esposito Joseph Resto Tony Russo Bartholomew Russo and Harry DiStephano for a November 10 holdup at the David Owens store 806 Fitton Street Woodbridge. They robbed patrons of 381 in cash and jewelry and cut telephone lines then locked patrons in a cellar. Owens identified items recovered by police.
