Woodbridge Lighting Commissioners led by Henry Dunham oppose wooden poles for Main street White Way and push for steel poles with underground wiring. The group aims to complete modern lighting before business season despite previous orders for temporary wooden poles.
The Eastern Star with the Craftsmen's Club hosts a two day bazaar at 94 Green Street Woodbridge New Jersey on March 25 and 26. Mrs Harry J Baker Sr chairs with vice chairs Mrs Nevin Guth W A Gilham and Roy Anderson. Wayne T Cox is secretary and Nevin Guth treasurer. Activities include a chicken dinner led by Mrs Albert Bowers and booths for pantry favors handkerchiefs Easter novelties mystery booth refreshments and bingo with fortune telling by Mrs Salter.
Miss Helen M Parker, a Woodbridge Township teacher, will marry Yale graduate Frank B Kelley of New Canaan Conn. The couple announced at a bridge luncheon with Yale colors and spring decoration. Kelley, Yale class of 1921 and railroad employee, stars on the Yale football team. Parker is Newark State Normal School trained and active in drama. The wedding date will be announced later.
The Avenel Parent-Teachers Association met in the school auditorium with president pro tem Mrs. F. E. Barth presiding due to Mrs. D. Wines illness. Miss Gensler and Miss Gunther classes performed skits and songs as plans were made for a February 18 food sale and refreshments were served.
Mrs James Somers entertained at cards for St James School Fund on Tuesday evening with fourteen tables in play. Prizes awarded to multiple players across games Pinochio Buchre Whist Fan Tan and more. Door prize went to Joseph Aligair and Miss Anna Hedges won the non player prize.
Miss Marie Janke celebrated her ninth birthday Sunday afternoon with music singing and games. May presents were given. Invited guests included Alice Hassey Vera Hutteman Arlina Brennan Ruth Janke Marie Janke Thomas McDermott Julius Richheimer Dorothy Schnebbe Madeline Schnebbe Karl Janke Wesley Janke George Janke and Mrs Charles Davis Mrs M Richeimer and Mrs Arthur Janke.
Elizabeth Chandler, 85, of Anderson Indiana, recalls eloping from Mount Sidney Virginia to Harper's Ferry and then marrying James Henry Chandler in the White House during Lincoln's presidency. Lincoln presided with a cabinet member present and the couple briefly stayed for a White House party before leaving for home. Chandler later joined Union forces. the couple moved to Indiana after the war. Lincoln reportedly aided their departure from the party.
A benefit card party and dance for St James school fund will be at St James Auditorium next Monday evening with music by the Night Owl Club orchestra. Prizes include a Gogi prize and a $25 fancy quilt. refreshments will be served and many attractive prizes offered. Chairman Mrs M Delaney leads a large committee of local ladies.
A special conference for Troop 41 Avenel Boy Scouts of America will be held at the Avenel Fire House at 7:45 P M. District Commissioner B F Bilison will preside. All current scouts and prospective members are urged to attend to reorganize the troop.
A series of obituaries notes the deaths of Peter Nealson a Woodbridge resident aged 63 at St. Michael’s Hospital Newark after a long illness. He worked at the Blue Front Grocery and Woodbridge Ceramic Works and lived with Joseph Weiner at 79 Main Street. Funeral services were held in Woodbridge with burial in the Presbyterian cemetery. Also noted is Raymond B. Dunham 24 of Elmwood Avenue Raritan Township who died after a lingering illness. he is survived by his mother and siblings. The funeral was held from his home with burial in Alpine cemetery. Charlotte Skay 60 wife of John Theodore Skay of 226 Fulton Street Woodbridge died after a heart attack while shopping in Perth Amboy. She leaves ten children and was interred after a service at First Congregational Church Woodbridge.
A Rosary Society benefit dance for Our Lady of Peace church in Fords was held at the Hut on Wednesday. Proceeds go to the church building fund with hopes to begin construction this spring. Fred O'Briens orchestra provided music, and a long committee list assisted by many women. Refreshments were served.
The regular monthly meeting of the Fourth Degree Father Grifin Assembly of the Knights of Columbus Middlesex Council No 857 Woodbridge will be held Sunday at 8 o'clock. Faithful Navigator John K F Ryan asks all members to attend as a library installation and fundraising ideas will be discussed.
Perth Amboy Public Service Electric and Gas manager J C Olwine says the 1927 budget is set and underground wiring with steel poles would cost about 75000 dollars. He notes Woodbridge would have to bury conduits and move lines to the center, tearing up Main street, and that the plan lacks financial justification while Woodbridge merchants push for change.
Woodbridge Businessmen's Association to hold its regular monthly supper meeting at the Rendezvous on St. George avenue and Freeman street. Secretary F. O. Sanderson announces the event for next Tuesday evening at :30 SHARP with a call for all members to attend and conduct business. Belmont Hendricks of New York City will perform the Cathedral Harp at the First Congregational Church next Sunday evening February 13 at seven forty five. The instrument has a unique church organ tone with twenty times the volume of a harp and can transpose instantly. Hendricks plans to comment on the piece and the instrument's features. the harp is bequeathed to the Smithsonian by its inventor for music students.
The Iselin Golden Eaglet Troop 1 met at the Firehouse on Wednesday with patrol exercises. New recruits Laura Grossman Edith Sisbeil Loretta Heyburn joined and recent rally awards were given for Second Class and Merit Badges. A Court of Honor is planned at Capt G Andrews home and upcoming badge dates are listed.
The Iselin Woman's Club held their regular meeting at Mrs. Alice Elliott's home last Monday. Despite bad weather a good portion of the membership attended after the business session. Refreshments followed.
Public Safety official George B. La Bar advocates repealing the Vice and Immorality Act and adopting home rule to let local voters decide Sunday observance issues. The letter, addressed to Senator Henry A. Williams, cites widespread violations and historical reports urging modernized limits and local control.
