Compton outlines the first formal quarterly audit of Middlesex County finances. He notes reduced auditing costs through quarterly reports and highlights paid emergency notes of $186,942.41 with only about $24,000 remaining, as of mid-1980.
Peter Condon 21, Irish auto mechanic living in Atlantic City, found asleep by Officer Leidner with a .38 caliber revolver. Held for grand jury on $1,000 bail by Judge B W Vogel after conflicting statements about an attempted road hold up. Condon claimed he found the gun but failed to report it, saying he had not seen a police officer all day.
A fire of unknown origin damaged two properties on Fulton Street. The vacant two family house at 230 Fulton Street owned by Simon Kahme burned early evening, while a nearby building and a barn containing a Ford sedan owned by Stephen Elek at 9:25 p.m. suffered partial destruction. Woodbridge Fire Company No. 1, led by Chief Louis J. Zehrer, battled the blaze until shortly before 2 a.m. with Elek’s property more successfully saved. Damages: Kahme property about 200 dollars. Elek property over 2000 dollars. Investigation underway.
The Drum and Bugle Corps of Woodbridge Post American Legion won fourth prize at the Toms River competition last Saturday. The local corps appeared neat in uniforms and drew audience praise. Palmyra won first, Perth Amboy second, and Trenton third.
Iselin Chemical Hook and Ladder Company District No. 11 received a silver loving cup from Edison Volunteer Fire Company Menlo Park for leading attendance at last week’s carnival. Avenel Fire Company and Raritan Township Company also competed for the cup, with many members listed among those present for the roll call.
Police Patrick J. Murphy left Monday evening for Duluth Minnesota to attend the annual Police Chiefs convention. Mrs Murphy and daughter Sudan accompanied him. Jamies Walsh, Captain of Detectives, will be acting chief during Murphy's absence.

Championship racer Bob Robinson, 36, of Benson Springs, AAA, was killed during the 100 lap feature at the local speedway. His car crashed through the rail at the west curve and dropped about 60 feet, with his wife and three year old son watching from a box seat. The collision occurred in the tenth lap as Moore, Frame and ten others were entered. Moore retired with motor trouble, leaving Frame in the lead.
Perth Amboy resident August Kaleta of 114 Hansen Avenue sustained minor injuries after his truck, owned by Elizabeth Haze ware Co., collided with Public Service Fast Line car No. 6572 driven by John Egersback. Kaleta received first aid at the scene.
At the Green Street and the super highway intersection a car driven by George Redial of Woodbridge collided with another car driven by Valentine Grzyb of Scranton. One passenger, Anthony Kaminsky of Jersey City, was lightly injured. both cars suffered minor damage.
Jimmie Maher, a World War II veteran, appeared before Judge Vogel on a disorderly conduct charge after an incident at the P and BR docks area. He acted violently and half unclad, prompting hospital care and guidance for treatment upon return to New York.
A former drunkard, Mr M, sentenced by Judge Vogel to workhouse, writes from Trenton praising the act as humane and transformative. He credits sobriety, a stable home, and a new career with restoring health and purpose, and offers to repay the judge’s kindness.

Drella of Correjy Avenue Iselin was injured when a wall at a building collapsed last Friday at St. Mark's Hospital New York. Fellow workers acted quickly pushing him aside preventing more serious injuries. Drella sustained a crushed hip.
The William P Campbell Association carnival in a Ga fe drew large crowds both nights. Jimmy Beans and Q Gardners orchestras entertained the young dancers as booths offered prizes and various gifts. John Lateon invites residents to attend the carnival tonight and tomorrow night.
The 106 suntanned boys from Kiddie Kee Well Camp near Metuchen return home Thursday while an equal number of girls from Middlesex County towns prepare to arrive Monday. Camp gains average over five pounds in July, with prize winners celebrated at a banquet. County officials praise facilities funded by a Building Fund, artesian well, and new electricity plant.
Township meeting approves steps to prepare ordinances for a municipal dock on Herry street and road improvements. Attorney Henry Clair Lavin to draft affidavits for early presentation, adjourned meeting set for Monday. Charging optimism, Mayor Ryan and committee believe dredging the creek and the dock will attract new industries.
Mrs. Mary Gormby, 60, of 1045 18th Avenue Newark, suffered serious injuries when a car she rode in collided with a car driven by Edward Gortaby of Newark at the Cleveland and Amboy avenues intersection. Gortaby’s vehicle struck while Dagger of Brooklyn turned left. Gormby was taken to Perth Amboy City Hospital with abdominal wound and facial and scalp lacerations.
John Strome Jr of Woodbridge will occupy the pulpit at Avenel Presbyterian Church Sunday morning an announcement by Rev Clair A Morrow states he is a Wooster College graduate and will enter the gospel ministry under the Presbytery next fall This item notes his intended path into ministry.
Five year old Robert Haus of 494 Cornell street Perth Amboy was struck yesterday at 4 46 pm on Amboy avenue near the park by a car driven by Joseph Daniels of 30 East Curtis Street Linden. Daniels said the child darted from behind a truck and ran into the vehicle. The boy was treated at Dr Joseph J Mark for bruises on the head face arms and legs.
Woodbridge Post and the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps plan to attend the New Jersey State Convention in Wildwood September 4 to 6. Prominent speakers include General Frank T. Hines and General P. C. Harris. bands, drum corps, and drill teams from over fifty posts will compete on Saturday with an air escort feature and a parade at 2 PM.
The township younger set enjoyed a Saturday evening dance at Sewaren Land and Water Club with Val Brown as host. Attendees included numerous residents and local couples, plus popular Lawrence Harbor players who performed and then took an airplane flight to Avenel.
Township officers announce a new golf course on the pew superhighway near the fire house in Avenel. Tow Cannan says the course is a success though a steam mail up from Woodbridge is said to be too much for him. Officer Fred Leidner won an airplane ride with a sugar barrel but has not chosen a day yet. Officer Rajpy Simonisen hit the ball so far that Tom has not recovered it.
