Linebarger address on Montana prospects and resources

R G Linebarger former Havre News Promoter editor and northern district bond and millage campaign chair spoke on Montana’s resources education and drought recovery over KGCX. He praised rainfall as a sign of renewal, cited Montana’s size population about 536000, noted gains in industry despite population decline, and urged optimism for prosperity ahead.

Governor Erickson vetoes special session call

Helena Sept 14 Governor Erickson will not call a special session to authorize anticipatory road warrants funded by future gasoline tax proceeds. He supports speeding highway work but cites no emergency and says the regular January session should handle it. A. W. Huxsel returned from a coast states trip with son Russell who will attend Stanford, switching from Chicago University.

McCone County Wins Medals at Richland Fair

McCone county placed second for county exhibits at the Richland County Fair. Dawson took first, McKenzie County third, and Daniels fourth. Walter Good, H R Remnemer, and Harry Hogar led the McCone booth with 120 exhibits winning 26 ribbons including 16 corn ribbons. Reinemer earned a first on a bushel of white dent, amid 20 entries in the class.

Roosevelt County Organizes For Two Referendums

A Roosevelt county central committee is formed to back Referendum 33 and 94. Hugh L. Marrow of Wolf Point named chairman with Wm. L. Young as vice chairman. The group includes county and city superintendents, state lawmakers, and local officials from Wolf Point Culbertson Froid Frazer Bamville Balnville Dowd Poplar and other towns. Chairman Marron expects Roosevelt county to pass both measures, praising plans to relieve state institution overcrowding and support higher education.

Enrollment Totals for Wolf Point City Schools

Wolf Point city schools report an enrollment of 582 this year up from 571 last year in the first week. High school and junior high total 271, up from 239, while grades total 311, up from 32. Northside school shows 47 pupils versus 63 a year ago. rural reports are not yet available.

Two golf titles were settled recently. In Merion New York Tommy Asmar won the professional US championship by defeating Gene Sarazen one up. At Wolf Point Montana Arlie M Foor captured the open championship by defeating Dr J R Burgess two up. Foor's win followed strong run through the club tourney with flights and consolations prizes awarded.

Livestock feeders may obtain credit through the Intermountain Livestock Marketing association partnered with the Federal Farm Board. Loans up to 60 percent of lamb value or 75 percent of cattle value are available, with higher loaning when feed is a larger share of value. City adopts police signal system and Sherman hotel as HQ

Mayor Swedberg states the city council adopted a police signaling system with the Sherman hotel office serving as headquarters. A red light atop the hotel will flash when police are needed, and officers will contact the Sherman to identify the caller. Arthur Terpe joins the force as night police and began duty last Saturday.

Club Endorses AAA Road Plan

A Commercial Club special meeting heard W L Young outline Montana AAA highway funding. Six million federal dollars, plus matching Montana funds, could finance about eleven million for roadwork and create up to three thousand jobs. A committee will draft a telegram urging Gov Erickson to endorse the plan and call a legislative special session. The meeting also referenced a Glasgow murder case and arraignment scheduling.

Roosevelt County Fair Culbertson racing and vaudeville lineup

The Roosevelt County Fair at Culbertson on September 23 and 24 features a top running program with 35 to 40 horses, a closing football game Wolf Point versus Seabey, and acts by the Brancel family Wade and Wade vaudeville troupe and Charles Flanagan. Universal Sound Reproduction will provide amplifiers, promising an unusual entertainment program. A farm sale is planned for September 24 by Mifred Lakehaug with S. Summy as auctioneer.

Finley Smith Re-Arrested After Poplar River Pursuit

Finley Smith fled from a Poplar cafe last week after leaving his party. He outran lawmen, waded the Poplar river near the railroad and hid in dense underbrush along the bank. He abandoned hat and coat on the riverbank before authorities recovered him.

Opening day at the new Conoco area golf course christened Listerud Fairways after a patron’s winner. Mrs Hamblin proposed name. judges chose it. Prizes on opening day honors went to J D Corrie 48 for men, Mrs Swensen 50 for women, student George Rathert 47 and best day score. Listerud offers five gallons gasoline weekly for any top score.

John Woodish Opens Grill Cafe on Fourth Street

John Woodish announces purchase of City Grill furniture and fixtures and relocation to the Erickson building on Fourth Street, former Ross second hand store. He plans a cafe with reasonably priced meals focusing on sandwiches stews and soups with hearty portions and good coffee.

Suit Tried Before Judge Gordon Over $100 Post Dated Check

J. K. Bramble won a civil suit against C. B. Berglund in Judge Gordon's court on Sept. 15. Berglund, represented by W. L. Rose of Poplar, allegedly gave Bramble a $100 post dated check that was later stopped. The case arose from an injury to Robert Aoe who fell from a wagon owned by O. Bergland. Bramble sought $300 as fair compensation, claiming the check was given in good faith to cover expenses. The check returned unpaid.

Women’s Club Annual Dinner Next Tuesday

The Wolf Point federated Women’s club will hold its annual dinner at the K hall next Tuesday evening, Sept. 23, at seven o’clock. All last year’s members are urged to renew, new members will be welcomed, and the banquet is priced at 60 cents a plate as a social feature amid light plans for the year.

Bauer Baby Dies From Scalds In Tragic Accident

Eugene Les Bauer, one year old, died after a hot coffee spill scalded him last Saturday. The child, beloved son of Ambrose and Mrs Bauer, had moved to Fairweather Street with five sisters nearby. Funeral services were held Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Rev. O R A Tollefson presiding. four pallbearers and flowers accompanied the service.

Three carloads head to California for winter visit

Three carloads of Vida people departed this week for California to spend the winter. The group includes Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Elzea and son Douglas to visit relatives in Turlock. Also traveling were W. H. Wills, Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Larson and baby James, and Mr. and Mrs. Ole Vine. They will travel via Glacier Park, Portland, and the coast route.
