Tenth Carnival Opens Amid Queen Race and Prizes

The tenth annual trade carnival launched, with the Farmers Union convention drawing focus. Queen candidates totaling over twenty vie for votes led by Avis Land, Florence Tilton, and Grace Phalen. Friday prize winners tally included John Thista and Ruth Hanson among others. Friday night standings show Avis Lund leading with 36,000 votes and Grace Phalen at 26,000.

Mrs Dolly Burgess of Helena met the county board to discuss support for the Florence Crittenton home. She travels as the home’s sole representative, highlighting its unique, state nonduplicated service. Union President Talks On Issues At Oklahoma City Coliseum

John A. Simpson national president of the Farm Union addressed nearly a thousand people at the Coliseum. The broadcast speech criticized failed remedial legislation and highlighted farm relief plans, calling for a July 4th ultimatum to Congress and outlining taxation based on ability to pay.

Twenty Immaculate Conception parish youths met at the Knights of Columbus hall to establish the Wolf Point chapter of the Young Men's Institute for Catholic boys aged 16 to 26. Cooks Visit In Wolf Point From Deadwood Trip

Mr and Mrs John F Cook arrived in Wolf Point for a few days after visiting Williston and Deadwood. They noted heavy snow and rain in South Dakota and traveled through muddy roads on the journey northward.

Vida Farmers Union Forms With Mass Meeting Called

At a McCone county convention in Vida the McCone county Farmers Union organized the Holiday association with Clarence Chamberlain as chairman and Clive Bixby as secretary. The group calls all farmers and businessmen to a mass meeting in Vida on Wednesday October 19 at 1 00 o'clock to discuss declaring a farm strike. All residents of the county and Wolf Point urged to attend.

Apple Train Wreck Delays Shipment Near Wolf Point

A boxcar wreck near Lohmiller six miles west of Wolf Point halted a Washington apple train bound for Atlantic coast markets. Salvage operations took seven hours to clear the track and another seven hours to remove debris. Four cars were saved and sent to Minneapolis while locals and Indians helped themselves to scattered fruit, leaving scarcely any apples on the ground the next day.

Farmers Union State Convention Lays Groundwork for 1994

Hundreds of farmers and farm women gathered at the Coliseum for the Montane Farmers Union annual convention. J T Kelly opened proceedings, with national president John A Simpson addressing delegates and broadcasting via KGCX. Friday saw bylaws revision and officer nominations as wristbanded boosters campaigned for next year’s host city. Thatcher and Emil Sifestad spoke on grain operations. Egley to speak on livestock Friday evening.

Montana newspaper veteran William Bole dies at 74

William McClure Bole 74, longtime Montana newspaper man and part owner of the Great Falls Tribune, died at his Bozeman home Tuesday. He retired as editor in 1927 after a long career beginning with an apprenticeship at 16, later acquiring interests from St Johnsbury to St Paul, and helping run the Great Falls Tribune with S. Warden. Funeral held in Bozeman. He was listed in the 1932 Who's Who.

Double Silver Wedding for Sand Creek Folks

Mr and Mrs Guy Sickles and Mr and Mrs C A Buxton celebrated a double silver wedding after a Sunday church service. Rev Milliam announced the ceremony and the couples renewed their vows, followed by a bountiful wedding dinner. The couples thank friends for help in marking nearly simultaneous silver anniversaries.

Mrs Clyde Patton Dies at Billings Hospital

Obituary notes the death of Mrs. Clyde Patton in Billings after a major operation. A former Wolf Point resident, she and her husband moved from Illinois to Poplar in 1909 and later to Wolf Point. She was a Civic League founder, Red Cross leader, and active in caring for flu patients during an epidemic. The Pattons lived in several towns including Centralia, Mon tana, with recent years in Powell Wyoming.
