Great Northern officials pledge support for bridge

A west bound Great Northern special with fifteen officials visited West Point for about an hour on Wednesday for its annual system inspection. They discussed the Wolf Point bridge project with county and local officials, and pledged aid to advance the campaign and depot improvements.

Winter storm drenches Plains and tests livestock

A 36 hour storm drenched the region with rain and up to a foot of snow in western North Dakota, Bainville eastward, and reached the Twin Cities as rain. Wind felled 140 poles and cut communications. ground soil is saturated, aiding small grain and range grass, but livestock losses are rising as horses and cattle die in the cold blast.

Electric chair for Snyder Gray

New York May 9 Ruth Brown Snyder and Henry Judd Gray, her corset salesman, were found guilty of first degree murder in the death of Albert Snyder. A mandatory death sentence was set but postponed for formalities until next Monday morning as cheers greeted the verdict outside the Long Island City court.

Noonday program halted by telephone interference

The Wolf Point studio on KGCX Vida was forced off the air Wednesday noon due to interference along the line between Wolf Point and Vida. A listener caused the problem by removing a receiver and moving about the room, interrupting the broadcast. Officials urge the culprit to stop and note the program’s return appears likely once the fault is corrected.

Year End School Features Commencement June 2

The local track meet was the best ever held with keen competition. Gate receipts were 22.85 dollars aiding the flat athletic purse. Harvey Vinson will represent us at Missoula. Debates in assembly covered free textbooks for Montana public school children. The affirmative won led by Miss Moody with English I and II debaters.

Tornadoes Brutalize Arkansas Towns Killing Dozens

In northeastern Arkansas a tornado blasted through more than a dozen towns causing 75 deaths and many injuries as communication collapsed. Egypt suffered eight fatalities while Hoxie Paul’s Switch Carlisle and others reported varying losses. The toll mounted as reports trickled in across the flood devastated region.

Cutting Roosevelt County Indebtedness

County Treasurer McFarlan reports investing 14000 of the sinking fund in county road bonds. This move reduces the overall indebtedness and increases interest earnings by the same amount. He states that on July 1 the county will retire 2200 of matured bonds.

Red Cross Quota Over Subscribed in Wolf Point

Wolf Point surpassed its Red Cross relief quota by sending 60 dollars to national headquarters for the Southern flood area. Attorney A M Foor led the campaign in the city and secured substantial subscriptions. Vida Bank reported 28 dollars received and sent in.

Opheim Men Mark The Road Leading South

Ed Hodap and John W. Kuller of Opheim completed marking the Opheim to Wolf Point trail via Nashull after a correspondence between Wolf Point official O T Stennes and Opheim club leaders. They reported Opheim’s strong support for better roads and markings and, after a brief stay, returned home. Hodap was an Opheim merchant and Kuller a former Opheim Methodist pastor.

Norby’s Sweet Shop Adds New Equipment

Norby’s Sweet Shop installed a new Frigidaire soda fountain this week, featuring six flavors and twelve flavor compartments, ebony tops for easy maintenance, brown marble exterior, and extra storage. The old fountain was sold to F. B. Turner for his pool hall. A replacement ice cream machine was also added to replace an aging unit.

Wolf Point clubs close year with officers reports at Erickson Hotel. Philanthropic department details 1091 garments 54 shoes and 21 rubbers plus food. city library drive and KGCX radio support noted. Commercial Club and American Legion back seven annual stampede with July 14 15 16 dates chosen, committees named, budget proposed and carnival debate unresolved.

Poppy Days Set for May 27 28 in Wolf Point

Poppy days are scheduled for Friday and Saturday May 7 and 28 to raise funds for disabled veterans. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the sale with Mrs J K Burgess in charge. Local organizations may order poppies for Memorial Day delivery before the dates. A remittance of ten cents per poppy is requested.

Levees Weaken Amid Mississippi Flood Threat Front

Severe Mississippi River flooding looms as a 60 mile front north of Baton Rouge is breached by high waters. Hundreds of workers and volunteers reinforce weakened levees from Bayou Glasses to Moreauville while relief teams shift toward Bayou Des Ghisses and Red River regions as flood crests move past Alexandria and Monroe.
