Community backs Bill Young for state railroad post

About fifty friends gathered Thursday in the court room to organize the William L. Young for Railroad and Public Service Commissioner Club. H. N. Marron chaired, with O Q Stennes as president, L M Clayton vice president, Hugh N Ton secretary, and Fr E Robert treasurer. Speakers praised Young as a capable, square–shooting citizen, noting the need to distinguish him from Leonard C. Young on the ballot. Local and visiting supporters urged wider town participation and recruiting volunteers for outreach efforts. The club plans to enlist communities on this state end, and invites voters friendly to Young to join. Also, the local golf club invited members to play at Fairview on the 18th and Scobey on the 25th.

Census figures for Roosevelt and Valley districts reported

Census returns received from Supervisor Hggers show preliminary figures for Roosevelt County District No. 13 with 187 people and 40 farms, District No. 17 including Culbertson with 1012 people, 22 farms. Culbertson population not shown separately. Valley County School District No. 22 Lasure 589 people, 1 farm. School District No. 2 Frazer 588 people, 78 farms. An error in last week’s School District No. 1 population totaled 277, not 227.

Severson to Attend Chicago MGM Convention

Clarence J. Severson will depart Salt Lake City soon for Chicago to attend the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Corp national convention at the Drake hotel for one week starting May 15. Special cars from Los Angeles San Francisco Portland and Seattle will join at Salt Lake City forming a train carrying Western Division representatives to the convention.

The big excitement at school this week is the junior prom Friday evening.

TenMill Road Levy Up at July Primary

County commissioners discussed a two year ten mill levy for road building at the July primary. Delegations from many localities urged new roads, and officials noted funds are tight. Voters will decide on extending the levy to cover two years to support farm product marketing and regional needs.

One Creighton Finally Jailed in Liquor Case

Ronald Creighton pleaded guilty in federal court to manufacturing liquor possession of equipment for that purpose and maintaining a nuisance. He received 60 days in Cascade county jail and a $400 fine for three counts, plus a suspended $260 fine and 11 month suspended sentence with five years probation on the fourth count. The government dismissed co defendants Henry and Al Becker as to the land violation. Prohibition agents testified the offense occurred along the Missouri river southwest of Bainville. Documents bearing Creighton’s name were found during the raid showing extensive liquor production gear and materials.

Riv-U-Let Salesmen Hold District Meet in Glasgow

Riv-U-Let fruit salesmen from the Northern Montana district met in Glasgow with Claud C. Hicks district manager and about 20 salesmen attending. O H Heine of Eugene Oregon and M A Hetland of Minneapolis spoke. Luncheon was at Alsop's Cafe. Minnesota average per customer was two cases, North Dakota two and a half, Montana three and three fourths. Writes Bad Checks Blames It To Booze

Charles Council, undersheriff, brought back A. P. Johnson from Dickinson accused of writing worthless checks. Johnson, 57, formerly of Wolf Point, claims he never had trouble before and says booze caused his actions when lacking funds. More than fifty bum checks passed in Wolf Point, Poplar, Culbertson and elsewhere, amounts from 1.50 to 25.00. judge Turner to hear the case at Poplar Friday.

New City Council Opens Under Swedberg Leadership

The new city council took office Monday night at a joint session with the old council. Mayor-elect Swedberg assumed the reins from Mayor Sienmes. Two new members joined Eli Maltby and J. White, with W. C. Johnson elected council president. Appointments included Jacob Beal as city clerk, Peter Lenz water superintendent, Todd Shamley chief of police and street commissioner, and Dr. H. B. Cloud city health officer. The Wolf Point Herald remains official newspaper. Standing committees were appointed.

Rio Rita at Liberty Theatre in lavish color spectacle

Radio Pictures presents Rio Rita a lavish music drama in color at the Liberty theatre. The film opens Tuesday with shows on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday May 13 14 and 15. It features Bebe Danielk in her screen debut a voice set to take her far in talking pictures.

Census totals for Wolf Point discussed in preliminary report

District Supervisor Chas Eggers reports Wolf Point’s population as 1540 with note it may be corrected. Protests or additions allowed for a dive day period after publication. Residents who believe they were omitted should contact Mrs. W. V. D. Chapman or The Herald Office by May 10. The number represents the city’s official count for ten years, excluding adjacent add subdivisions outside city limits, such as Old Town and Fort Peck Agency areas, with surrounding institutions and Indians included in the broader area.

Rain Brings Bright Crop Prospects For Spring Planting

Rain and more rain boost prospects as crops go in across the region. Crops except corn and some flax are in the ground and fields look green. Snow fell on higher country, but overall it is a wonderfully favorable spring for planting trees gardens and lawns.

Early morning departure for Canada by four travelers was halted 16 miles north as heavy snow and freezing conditions coated the windshield. Mr Foot recalled a similar experience last fall and chose to postpone the journey until safer weather and better roads.

Telephone Lines Being Rebuilt In The City

The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co. has a crew at work rebuilding and improving the telephone exchange over Wolf Point. A stronger construction will be used and more wires strung to enable more subscribers to enjoy individual service.

A large turnout of local and visiting Masons filled the chairs for the May 1 Past Masters night. Wm. Pipal was conferred Master Mason, with notable visitors from Bainville Culbertson and Poplar lodges among the attendees.

Close finish at Big Four Track Meet at Culbertson

Bainville led by 2 points after a tight Big Four meet at Culbertson Saturday as Scobey, Wolf Point and others chased. Two records fell: Anklim of Culbertson set 440 yard dash mark in 4.8 seconds amid the sprint events and Baluville’s Wolf Point mile relay saw a new time of 5 minutes 5 seconds. Results show Lagseon of Bainville won low hurdles in 29.6 seconds with Pugh of Scobey second.

Company E Receives Summer Camp Orders at Fort Harrison

Wolf Point and Culbertson unit of United Infantry will hold the Regiment's Summer Training Camp at Fort Harrison Helena Montana from June 14 to June 18 throughout their initial training period. The camp features a built kitchen and dress ball for each unit with careful supervision of meals cleanliness and food quality. Local organizers anticipate a period of practical field training under camp conditions and the city of Helena cooperates providing entertainment and healthy recreation supervised by a special officer assigned by the commanding officer.

Schillinger School Wins Circle Roundup

The McCone county roundup at Airels on Saturday drew a large crowd. Schillinger School placed first and received a red cup while Mus School, taught by Blanche Pipal, took second and a silver cup. Miss Starner, county superintendent, praised Miss Pipal for guiding a small county school to success.

Kenneth Steffenson Wins Declamatory Contest

Kenneth Steffenson captured first place at the local declamatory contest held in the high school last Friday, with Evelyn Coffey second. Steffenson is expected to represent Wolf Point at the state declamatory in Missoula next week, after a program featuring May Festival playlets and performances by Miss Strickland’s pupils. The 1930 Field Meet at Walt drew record attendance from District 45 rural schools, with Volt’s new building hosting exhibits and student shows, while a large crowd praised the day’s orderly events and spirited contests.

Federal court hands out jolts

A Grony Falln court heard several cases with notable penalties. Ted Wills pleaded guilty to possession of minors and received jail days plus a suspended term, fines totaling 850, and his wife Olive was fined for occupancy charges. Gen Vinson of Wolf Point pleaded guilty on three counts, getting 60 days, 160 dollars in fines, and a three month suspended sentence with four years probation. The Vinson Rooming house was ordered padlocked for a year, and three drink parlors along with a Bainville confectionery were ordered closed for a year.

Florence Coulter in Fad Census Contest

Mrs Charles Coulter acted as the guesser in the Fad population contest and won silk stockings valued at three prizes. Her city estimate was 1535 while Superintendent Eggers lists 164 as the actual census total. Guesses ranged from 1500 to 1599 with multiple entrants including Florence R Coulter at 1535 and Janet Lovell at 1555.

Poplar Pool Hall Robbery Sparks Fresh Clues

Two unknown men raided the Butler Herstrom pool hall early Wednesday taking cigars, cash about 17 dollars, and candy. Neighbor Tew Borwski reported seeing two intruders near the rear, one brandished a gun, both appeared intoxicated. They forced a back storm window then entered and escaped out a front window. No arrests or solid clues yet.

Indian Alleged Liquor Sales Case in Turner Court

Complaint filed in Judge Turner's court alleges William Knorr sold liquor to two Indian youths, Abraham Greybear aged 17 and Henry Begs-His-Own aged 18. Two complaints were filed, naming the alleged seller and alleging illegal sales to minors.
