Wolf Point Students Compete In Constitution Orations

Four Wolf Point high school students delivered original orations on the federal constitution to select a district contestant for Poplar. Bernard Geisen led, Harold Shipman second, with Virginia Owings and Leslie Beyer also competing. District contenders include Plentywood, Richey, Poplar, and Wolf Point, judged by Walton, Peterson, and Lewis.

Schoolhouse Burglar Sentenced to One Year

A burglar who rifled through teachers desks seeking apples or other items at a schoolhouse two weeks earlier pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced to one year in the state penitentiary, the minimum possible sentence for the offense.

Train Schedules Change June 15 Across Major Routes

Great Northern announces a new timetable effective June 15. Train No. 1 departs Chicago 9:30 PM and Minneapolis 1:00 AM, arriving Wolf Point about 1:30 PM next day. No. 2 leaves Seattle 2:00 PM and arrives Wolf Point around 1:20 AM, reaching Minneapolis at 7:30 PM. No. 3 leaves St Paul 11:06 PM arriving here about 9:30 PM, No. 4 reaching about 8:00 AM. Trains 28 and 236 between Butte and Havre connect with No. 2 and No. 4 to maintain mail service.

Silk Stockings Trial: 60 Days For Bad Check

Frank Niles, claiming various names, passed a $5 check for $1.50 silk stockings in Bainville and was arrested after miswriting the first check. He pleaded guilty before Judge Gordon, who sentenced him to sixty days and costs, noting his wife would suffer most. Niles said he sought work westward and hoped to rejoin his wife at Bainville.

Fire destroys vacant south town house

Fire alarm sounded around four Sunday morning as a long unoccupied south town house burned to the ground. The home once belonged to B Barsiey from the coast. No wind aided the blaze and the origin remains unknown. onlookers witnessed flames leaping high and sparks soaring over a hundred feet.

Hernandez with strong interest in Southside briquetting samples returns from Dickinson briquetting plant where 100 pounds of coal is brought back for analysis. American Legion plans junior baseball teams in several towns

The local post held a Tuesday meeting with plans to sponsor junior baseball for boys under 17 across Plentywood Poplar Scobey Culbertson Wolf Point and Glasgow. A cemetery tree program was proposed with ground prep. Memorial Day events will be organized with school cooperation and several committees formed. The post expects its largest membership in years with nine new members joining and more hoped for.

Appelgren Auction Draws Large Crowd

A historic sale at the Gust Appelgren place north of town attracted what locals estimated as well over 500 people. The herd of milk cattle sold well with several animals fetching over 100 dollars each, though the older cows did not. Appelgren, who filed on his homestead in 1914, has rented the farm to Amos Schroeder from south of Oswego.

Machinery Pouring In by Carload Shipments

Carload shipments of machinery have been arriving rapidly and moving out just as fast. Styer Motors received a carload of implements, Cogawell Implement Co two carloads of machinery, Camrud Motors a carload of autos, Monarch Lumber Co and Farmers Lumber Co each a carload of lumber, Stennes McCann Co and Motor Salon four carloads of tractors each. Other dealers report shipments on the way. Westland Oil Co sent two cars of gas, Equity received three cars gas and fixtures for their oil station.

Finley Smith Sentenced to Thirty Days in County Jail

Finley Smith pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace after allegedly giving liquor to a 16-year-old at Brockton. Judge Gordon sentenced him to 30 days in the county jail.

Skidoo Hits Car at Crossing West of W. P.

A near fatal grade crossing crash west of town occurred Tuesday afternoon when an eastbound skidoo struck a car driven by John Funk of Lustre. Funk and his wife and Mr. Dick, traveling from the west to Wolf Point, escaped serious injury after Funk angled the car to run parallel to the track. The compromised car suffered a crushed fender and bent axle, but the occupants credit the quick turn with saving their lives and note the incident underscores the need for an underground viaduct to prevent such crashes.

Mrs Forbes Attends Royal Neighbors Convention

Mrs. Forbes attended the state convention of the Royal Neighbors at Great Falls as a district delegate. Over 200 delegates and visitors were present with nine degree teams competing. Shelby took first place, Lewistown second, and Mary Dignan of Glasgow and Finnie M Brandy of Miles City were elected delegates to the Supreme Camp in Minneapolis in May. A banquet followed at the K of P hall with Mrs Katheryn Townsend presiding and an engaging program of toasts and pep songs.

Foch Dies at 77 After Illness in Paris Home

Marechal Ferdinand Foch famed generalissime who led Allied forces in World War I died today at his Paris home aged 77 after a long illness. Persistent heart, kidney, and lung troubles culminated in a fatal heart collapse despite days of cautious improvement. Visitors were not admitted, and Pershing paid respects to Madame Foch without meeting the former commander.

Olsen Of McCabe Again President Of County Farm Bureau

At Culbertson on March 16 the Roosevelt County Farm Bureau re elected Ole Olsen of McCabe as president for the coming year. Officers also include H C Bjorge Culbertson vice president and Chas G Hawkins Culbertson secretary. The meeting focused on extension service projects for the year including crop standardization tillage and forage production, variety tests and windbreaks, livestock demonstrations and tours, poultry projects on turkey marketing and chick rearing, and a plan for two county meetings plus possible machinery day and a Farm Bureau picnic. Jacobson Baby Dies In Georgia Area

The two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Melvin Jacobson of Waska country died Sunday after a five day illness. Double pneumonia and complications caused the death. Funeral services were held from the First Lutheran church on Tuesday afternoon with many friends in attendance to extend sympathy to the bereaved family.

Indians Refuse Guard Drill Led to Arrests

Three Poplar National Guard members Stanley Lester Hubert Brown and Wilford Lambert refused to attend drill and were arrested. They were brought up here the first of the week and held in the county jail. All are Indians.

Out of Court Settlements Fold Several District Cases

Several cases set for trial at this district court term were settled out of court. The Skarie receiver suit against Switzer was vacated and the Schad suit against Farmers State Bank of Medicine Lake dismissed as settled. Young and Schafer collection actions were resolved, and Mrs. Douglas versus Frerich ended with a jury impaneled but not reached. Damages and allocations referenced.

Glasgow Wins District Music Meet at Glasgow

Glasgow took first place in the district music meet held last Saturday in Glasgow with Wolf Point second and Nashua third. Winners included Leonard Kaniewski in boys solo and Dorothy Torkelson with Trene Inglehart in piano duet. Wolf Point and Poplar bands placed first and second respectively.

Power farming shows rapid development in Momana region

Back from Coast Howe Family Returns from Washington trip

Mr and Mrs Sig Howe and children came home Tuesday morning after a three month visit across Washington chiefly near Seattle. They found the winter cold and damp and say they enjoyed some coast features but still prefer Montana overall.

Paul Paulson Sues Taylor in Roosevelt County Case

In Roosevelt County, Paul Paulson of Grenora North Dakota sued Charles K. Taylor, editor of the Producers News at Plentywood, for 1912.97 dollars in wages from October 1922 to October 1924. A jury found for Paulson after a two day trial. Judge Stanley B. Felt presided. Taylor indicated intent to appeal.

Memorial Bell Hung In Lutheran Church

The church received a memorial bell donated by Mrs. Mary Moore in memory of her son Robert. The bell arrived last week and was hung in the belrey, with its first ringing on Wednesday night.
