Services Held For E G Brownlee In Wolf Point

Edward Gardner Brownlee formerly a farmer and businessman of Wolf Point was laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery after a Masonic service at the hall. J L Brooks of Culbertson delivered the oration as the ritual was completed at the grave. Survivors include wife Nellie, sons Jim and Gardner, daughter Mae, a sister Mrs J T Trowbridge and husband, and other relatives.

Roosevelt County Farmers Union 4th of July Convention

The Roosevelt County Farmers Union hosts its fourth annual convention on July 4 with a morning business session at 9 30 in the Indian School gym and an afternoon picnic and speeches at the grounds. Delegates will elect officers for another year and hear Chas D Egley of South St. Paul on the program alongside State President J T Kelly.

Tractor Drivers Urged to Protect Oil Treated Highways

State highway crews oil treat No 2 highway east of Wolf Point to Poplar and east of Culbertson to Bainville. Oiled roads save motorists and state money. Lugo on tractors or heavy implements damages the crust. Digging holes or driving stakes also harms roads. Citizens share the cost of improvements and should avoid needless damage to keep taxes down.

Major Lohmiller Buried Friday

Major Charles B Lohmiller 66, a veteran of Indian wars and World War I, died in a Miles City hospital Tuesday morning. Services were held in Sidney Friday morning. He served as Fort Peck Indian Reservation superintendent from 1905 to 1917, guiding land allotment irrigation schools and townsite openings that opened the land to white settlement. He moved to Poplar from Fort Meade in 1890s as chief clerk of the agency.

Frank A Schmidt Seeks Clerk of Court on Republican Ballot

Friends describe Frank A Schmidt as a strong Republican candidate for clerk of court on the July primary ballot. A 15 year county resident with farming and business experience, he is quiet and public spirited having volunteered with Roosevelt county relief committee last winter. He plans extensive county outreach to meet voters before the primaries.

Floods Leave County With Major Bridge Damages

Heavy cloudbursts in the county east end caused extensive damage to roads. Fourteen or more bridges grades and culverts were destroyed or severely damaged and must be replaced or repaired immediately. Commissioner W C Adams calls it the worst storm damage to county roads ever. Some bridges would have needed replacement soon but could not be taken all at once. Ed Krebsbach was elected Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus meeting held Thursday evening. Senate rejects veteran bonus in 62 to 18 vote

A Senate vote of 62 to 18 buried hopes for immediate payment of 2.4 billion dollars to veterans holding war bonus certificates. The Patman bill had passed the House 211 to 176 after heavy lobbying, with seven Republicans and a farm labor senator backing the measure. The Senate then tabled a motion to reconsider 44 to 26, with Walsh of Montana voting against and Wheeler for the proposal.

Poplar Sets Fourth Celebration With One Dollar Admission

Poplar plans a July fourth event offering five hours of entertainment starting at 1 p m for one dollar adults with free admission for children under twelve and reduced rates under sixteen. The day features a baseball game wolf point versus vida foot races trick riding rope spinning pony and horse races auto races stock car fight card band music fireworks and more including air planes a merry go round and a dance.

Crews Push Oil On 22 Mile Highway Section

Alternating two shift crews accelerate work on oiling No 2 highway between Wolf Plant and Poplar a 22 mile stretch. The process uses two oil applications a penetrating oil and a heavier high asphalt mix with gravel to form a smooth durable crust. Experts say oiling outperforms concrete paving by shedding water and improving safety while lowering tire and fuel costs though abuse can ruin the surface and require costly repairs.

W C Bill Adams a popular incumbent from Froid seeks renomination for the county commissioner seat. Appointed by Judge Pan to fill an unexpired term, Adams has earned support for his competence and conscientious service, and his year of board experience gives him an edge over rivals. He farms near Froid, home steaded in 1911, and enjoys strong eastern county backing.

Dr J G Veldhuis and J Pf fils retired from Missouri after Grand Lodge of the Royal Arch Masonry session. Delegates faced a 14 hour wait for a train out of Helena but found a Mason heading to the convention who gave them a ride. The doctor noted conditions beyond the divide look less green. Father Richard New Pastor at Cath Church in Wolf Point

Rev. A. J. Richard arrives to lead the local Catholic parish after previously serving at Glasgow and Glentana. He is known for youth work, helped build a community house in Glasgow, and replaces Father Benedict with Father Senilin moved to Malta.

Last Rites for Beloved Pioneer Sherman Cogswell

Hundreds attended the funeral for Sherman T. Cogswell, pioneer citizen and benefactor, with a large church service at the Presbyterian church and a grand Masonic rite at the hall. The procession stretched over half a mile to Greenwood cemetery where final rites were observed, with J L Brooks giving the oration and Rev. Wm G Johnson delivering prayers and a life sketch.
