Rail wage cuts approved by board amid protest

Chicago June 6 protests by United States railroad labor board executives over a seven cent hourly cut for railway shop mechanics and nine cents for freight car men, affecting about 400,000 workers and saving the railroads roughly 60 million dollars yearly. The order, effective July 1, follows a prior 50 million dollar cut for maintenance of way laborers, with minority labor leaders accusing the majority of ignoring human needs and failing to justify the discrimination against car workers.

Wage decrease yet higher purchasing power for shop workers

The ruling asserts that despite the ordered wage reductions, shop employees would earn more in real purchasing power than in 1917. It cites machinists and car men, claiming their purchasing ability would rise by 18.8 percent and 45.7 percent respectively under the new wages, relative to the 1917 rate. Continued on last page.

Sunburst Well Proves Producer in Great Falls

Sunburst No 1 well by Sunburst Oil and Gas in section 24, T36N R2W, came in at 2 30 pm at 1550 feet with an initial estimate over 100 barrels a day. Tests show 300 barrel per day potential, gas flow strong, and plans to deepen the sand and casing to reach production. The discovery near the Campbell and Kevin syndicate well expands the Kevin Sunburst field, with early expectations of multi-section impact and rail transport plans forthcoming.

Northeast Bankers Hold Interesting Convention

At the Montana Bankers Association Group Four annual meeting in the Palm room of the Sherman and the dining room, bankers from Phillips, Valley, Roosevelt, Daniels and Sheridan counties highlighted strong attendance and upbeat spirit. County reports praised corn and potato gains, creamery profits, hail losses, dairy strength, and cooperative grain marketing while speakers urged diversified farming, better dairy practices, and expanding alfalfa and fruit crops to stabilize farm income.
