Man drunk on rubbing alcohol robs Indian home

Cecil Grant, a 30 year old man known for wrestling, drank rubbing alcohol bought under false pretenses and went to Oldtown where he broke into a house inhabited by two elderly blind Indian women. He threatened assault and caused disruption while intoxicated, amid prior legal troubles and a suspended sentence. The sequence started after he sought the alcohol for an imagined rheumatism cure.

County Holds Good Sale of Lands and Town Lots

Roosevelt county conducted tax delinquent sales on the 22nd and 28th for town lots and farm property in Froid Bainville Culbertson and surrounding areas. About 2,520 acres of farm land sold with some parcels above appraised values, while town property brought a loss. Following attorney general guidance and a supreme court ruling the county board voted to refund to county banks the protesting taxes in excess of the court decision.

No Date Set By Paul For Jury Term

At a law and motion session Judge Paul did not fix a spring district court jury term date but ordered pending judges to review cases for possible trial. No definite term is set though a March call is possible. Few matters arose beyond motions and demurrers as evidence was heard in Audrey Newton versus George Newton and the divorce of Harriet Whiteagle from Jerome Whiteeagle, both parties being Poplar Indians.

Narrow Escapes at Crossing Near Poplar Blizzard

James Carroll and family narrowly escaped a serious crash while returning from Poplar during a blizzard. Approaching a crossing two miles east, the Galloping Goose appeared to hit the crossing simultaneously. Carroll slammed on the brakes and stopped six feet from collision. No accident occurred.

Frazer men Oscar Gribble and Frank Barth face hearing

Oscar Gribble and Frank Barth of Frazer, arrested in the Frazer still raid, will have their hearing before Commissioner O. T. Stennes on the 31st. The date was postponed from an earlier schedule due to Indian pay day.

Community's Big Annual Night at Sherman Hotel

The Wolf Point Community plans its big annual business meeting at the Sherman hotel on Tuesday evening January 29. Superintendent P H Livingston heads the entertainment segment with Secretary Gordon, while officer elections are the main routine item. Members vote, but guests and prospective members, including women, are invited to attend.

Moonshiners Bonds Reduced to 1000 dollars

The bonds of Clarence Demps ey I A Rutten and BP Wilson were reduced by Judge Pray of the federal district court from 5000 to 1000 dollars each. Frank Weinrich of Fort Union and William Powers of Bainville posted the bonds and the men were released from jail Thursday after being arrested on a mammoth still near Frazer.

Burglar Steals From Stennes-McConnon Hardware Store

A burglar gained entry via a rear window Monday night at Stennes-McConnon hardware store, stealing seven or eight dollars in silver, a dozen pocket knives, and other items. He fled through the same window. Chief Ed Nichol tracked him briefly but lost the trail. Joe Turcotte was linked by tips but left town. Turcotte’s son Tom was implicated, Joe confessed, and Dan Turcotte brought him home. Joe Turcotte was bound over to district court with $1,000 bonds, to face Judge Paul on February 1.

Poplar Woman Narrowly Missed in Train Crash

Mrs. Tom Colgan, returning from California, sat just behind a vacant seat when an auto headlight crashed through a train window and into the aisle. The headlight came from a collision between a car carrying five Mexicans and the train. all car occupants died. Colgan narrowly avoided injury while traveling near Los Angeles recently.

Northwest Service Stores Enjoy Strong Year Across Chain

The Northwest Service Stores report a highly satisfactory year with all outlets contributing. Wolf Point unit, managed by F. J. Neutgens, posted the largest business volume while Glasgow, under Art Hall, ranked second. Other locations include Nashua, Poplar, Plentywood and Williston.

Wolves Over Glasgow In High-Scoring 86-4 Victory

The Wolves defeated Glasgow 86 to 4 on Friday night. Bechtel and Herman led scoring with Shipman and Weeks making key late adjustments. Glasgow showed a crisscross passing style but poor finishing while Parke and Etchepare stood out for the visitors. Substitutions shaped the ending as Weeks and Shipman contributed off the bench.

Airways Company Reports Profitable First Season

Wolf Point Airways officers and stockholders held a midweek meeting to review last season and plan ahead. The new firm organized last summer shows a 1 percent profit on investment with cash on hand, hangar built, student training income and commercial tying cited. Pilot Kim Cook remains employed on commission. The board voted to upgrade the Travelair plane motor and other minor safety and efficiency improvements.

Recalls Severe Blizzard of 73 in Osage News

Paul Schillinger, Sr. recalls the three day blizzard of 1973 described in the Osage News of Osage, Iowa, noting many lost lives while tending stock. Teachers and students were trapped without food, benches and furniture burned to keep from freezing, and the storm lasted three days with heavy snowfall.

Low Cost Wheat Train Travels Through Montana To Wolf Point

The Low Cost Wheat train touring Montana arrived in Wolf Point on Wednesday noon, parked near elevator row. It showcased ten flat cars of farm implements, grain cleaning gear, wheat exhibits, and a combined diner sleeper, with placarded explanations but many farmers blocked by extreme cold from viewing. A Liberty theater meeting drew farmers and townspeople for two and a half hours, presenting practical experiments from over a hundred state farms and urging cost efficient, businesslike farming practices and timely market sales.

Montana Tourist Trade Booms With Outside Visitors

Montana earned 15,089,497 from tourists from outside states in 1928, up 5,089,497 or 33 percent from 1927. 239,668 foreign cars entered the state with 3.3 persons per car, averaging 6.6 days per stay and 632 miles traveled. Each car's visitors spent 62.96 during their Montana visit, totaling the year’s tourism spend.
