Northwestern rail merger announced with new operating company
In New York on January 18, President Ralph Budd of the Great Northern and President Charles Donnelly of the Northern Pacific outlined preliminary plans for a large northwestern railway merger. A new company would control stock and lease lines to a single operating carrier that would run the Spokane Portland and Seattle Railway. The Chicago Burlington and Quincy would remain 97 percent controlled by the two northern lines.
