Rathert Rites Held Sunday for E B Rathert

Funeral services for Mrs E B Rathert were held at First Presbyterian church on Sunday afternoon. The church was packed and flowers filled the scene as Rev S A Walker led the service. Eastern Star members conducted the ritual and she is remembered as a charter Riverside lodge member and Civic League founder. She battled tuberculosis since 1927 and died after a pneumonia attack, leaving husband F E Rathert and two sons Charles and George, plus her parents and a sister.

Berlin February 6 The reichstag today adopted a bill ratifying Germany's signature of the Kellogg renunciation of war pact. The vote stood 287 to 127.

Salinas Calif Feb 5 John E B Hartwig of Glasgow Mont was named a director of the newly organized Rodeo Association of America here Tuesday. The new group will manage rodeos round ups and wild west shows throughout the country.

McCone Man Receives Farm Life Check for Article

H. E. Prall of Sank Creek spent Wednesday and Thursday in Wolf Point stating it took him three days to reach the town from his homestead. He recently received a substantial Farm Life check for his article Some Horses We Have Broken.

Grant Given 90 Days for Crime in Oldtown Village

Cecil Grant, recently arrested on assault charges after breaking into a house in Oldtown and attacking two elderly Indian women, was tried before an Indian council in Poplar and sentenced to 90 days in the Indian jail, a penalty many regard as too light for the crime. Henry Bartz, arrested in Froid on a white slavery charge, was taken to Great Falls by a U.S. marshal to face federal court. Clyde Schwartz, already serving a sixty day sentence for stealing a cash register at Poplar, was released after completing his term. Walter Lynch, who ran a telegraph school here, was arrested in Great Falls on bad check charges and sent to Lewistown to answer them. additional bad checks are alleged locally.

Texas Murderer Kills Frye Mgr in Montana

Havre reports a Texas cowpuncher known as Charles Gannon killed Ralph Heyward, Rimrock ranch manager, after Heyward criticized his work. Ross, wanted in Texas for killing a stock inspector, fled via Canada to Montana, where he shot himself after Heyward’s death. Three cowpunchers were detained. one escaped to Browning. Mrs. Ross seeks burial for Tom Ross. Heyward’s family waits in Seattle.

Prohibition Officer Jack Marmon with City Marshall Clyde Swant raided the Leo Conlin pool hall Saturday afternoon and found a small quantity of illicit liquor. Conlin was arrested and fined $100 and costs by Police Magistrate R. O. Lunke. He had earlier been arrested in a still capture near Frazer on illegal transport and possession charges.

Siren to Sound for Firemen's Ball Tonight

Fire chief B Howe announces a siren will sound at seven o'clock this evening to signal the Firemen's ball at the Coliseum. Residents should not be alarmed as Krebsbach's orchestra will provide music for the big seasonal event drawing a large crowd.

McCONE CONTEST SET FOR FEB 18

The Conkiin Horsford commissioner contest trial is set for February 18 at Circle. Judge Ford, originally to preside, was disqualified by the Conkin side. Judge O. & Goddard of Billings will sit instead. Hearing occurred December 29 at Glendive. Horsford attorney John Kine filed demurrers and a motion to strike parts of the complaint. While Ford refused to strike any part, it is said some parts of Horsford’s answer were stricken. Pending outcome, Horsford remains in office per attorney general ruling.

Call Central For Fire Department Alerts Says Chief Howe

Fire chief Charles Howe advises calling Central for fire department needs instead of contacting the fire hall. Central will sound the siren and alert the firefighters with the fire location, avoiding delays when the hall is unmanned.

Return trip from California ended in Miles City

Mr and Mrs Henry Diedrich who had spent months in California returned to their Nickwall country home by car to Miles City and train the rest of the way. They planned to push home but Miles City warned of bad roads, so they halted there. They found the journey pleasant yet 40 below weather contrasted with Los Angeles heat.

Whitefish, Feb 2 The Whitefish Pilot, the town’s oldest paper, adopts a policy to print all police blotter news regardless of social or business prominence. The editor emphasizes news is news and cites divorce and family troubles as the sole exception to prior omissions.

Mrs Prendergast Burned By Gas Blaze

Mrs Prendergast suffered burns after a gasoline fire near a gas stove Tuesday. While washing a dress in gasoline the fuel ignited and clothes burned. She wrapped towels around herself to smother the flames with help from neighbor Axel Grimerud who assisted.

Marital Licenses Issued in Poplar and Nearby Counties

Tuomas iron Cloud and Eie abeth Youpee of Poplar obtained a marriage license for January 21. A license was issued on January 2 to Matt DeMarrais of Sisseton South Dakota and Miss Jessie Johnson of Culbertson for marriage.

Tax audit appointed by Dwyer for county hearsay

The Board of County Commissioners authorized J. D. Dwyer of Lewistown to conduct a thorough tax audit from April 1, 1919 to December 1, 1928 including Sheridan and Roosevelt County delinquent transactions at a salary of 150 dollars monthly starting March 1. Coroner Joseph Montgomery was appointed. A gopher poison contract was let to Bainville Pharmacy with related supplies from West stores. Frank Cusker led a local meeting on road matters north of Poplar.

No Extension Granted on Fort Peck Homestead Payments

A. T. Listng reports William Spry, U S commissioner, declines further extensions for Fort Peck reservation homesteaders to make due payments. The 1925 1926 acts provided prior extensions. November 1 1928 was deadline. Some entries date to 1914 and only partial payments have been made. remaining entries may seek extensions under the 1917 act.

Carload Shipments Being Received Now

C P Swedberg reports multiple carload shipments arriving recently. Forde was received by Motor Sales, Chevrolets by Northern Chevrolet Co, and auto trucks by MB Fargen. Cogswell Implement Co and Fargen each took in a carload of implements. Momerch Lumber Co received carloads of naste and plaster board. Cogswell and Northwest Service Store each took salt and syrup respectively. Mrs J F Cook left for Minneapolis for Market Week to buy for Cooks Ready-to-Wear and visit a Minnesota brother.

Wolf Point second stringers beat Brockton 17 15 as first string routed Malta 35 9. Nedrad led Wolf Point, Beyer earned strong guard play. Gilligan and Anderson starred for Brockton, with Bechtel Wright and Herman key for Malta in a low scoring start and late scoring flurry.

Chinook Man Reported Missing After Confidence Scheme

In Chinook on Feb 4, Fred Harding a 29 year resident and longtime sheepherder disappeared after traveling with about 12 to 15 thousand dollars, allegedly to deliver to California. He met two men in Long Beach who urged stock investments. Sheriff G W Fleming sent detectives to California as locals fear foul play while court sessions resume Feb 13.
