Leavitt Urges Colton's Bill to Speed Federal Roads
Congressman Scott Leavitt urged the House roads committee to pass the Colton bill to accelerate highway construction on federal lands in fourteen western states. He noted Montana holds about one third of its land federally owned and that 35 percent of forest land income goes to counties with forests. The bill would add 3.5 million dollars annually for three years, with Montana receiving about 262 thousand dollars yearly for projects beyond current authorizations. He warned the federal timetable could stretch 25 years for national forest highways and 10 years for roads in these areas.
