Education Leaders Elected At Montana Education Association Meet

D S Williams of Bozeman was chosen president succeeding Frank H Livingston of Wolf Point at the Montana Education Association delegate assembly in Helena. Merle C Gallagher of Great Falls and Catherine Nutterville of Butte were elected first and second vice presidents with R J Cunningham of Helena secretary. The gathering, at the Placer hotel and Helena high school, included discussions on state lands tax exempt lands teachers retirement law and junior colleges ahead of an all-Montana banquet and a closing session with committee reports and elections.

Roosevelt Opposes General Manufacturers Sales Tax

President-elect Roosevelt opposes a general manufacturers sales tax in Congress as a means to balance the budget. Advisers say he is horrified by such a program and would veto efforts to revive the tax. Flightner Takes Phillipburg Penney Store Post

Ray Flightner, four and a half years as Manager Heinze’s assistant at the Anaconda J C Penney Co store, leaves Wednesday for Phillipsburg to become manager of the Penney store there. The move comes with short notice and is viewed as a compliment within the Penney system. Flightner and his wife and children will relocate once packed, leaving behind many friends who wish them success in the new posting.

Indians Return From Ft Belknap Meeting

Joshua Wetsit and Growing Four Times returned Friday from the Fort Belknap reservation where an Indian conference gathered Gros Ventres leaders to map a program for Indian affairs for the incoming administration. Rocky Boys and Blackfeet endorsed actions and offered cooperation. Resolutions urged more higher education, remaking the old system, and sought funding for relief and road projects, plus swift court claims. A voters club was organized among the Indians.

Christmas Boxes Bring Much Cheer Across the Community

The Woman's club led a community Christmas box drive with help from organizations and individuals. Over forty baskets were packed and distributed with toys prepared by 4-H girls, Boy Scouts for errands, Lions club candy and nuts, and local families manufacturing toys. Donors include Amos Shrader, Frank Shumway, W. L. Young, Axel Erickson, Dwight Cox, and acknowledgments to A. M. Fadness and Lloyd Montgomery for meat prep and delivery.

Scout Gardner Brownlee Receives Eagle Emblem

Gardner Brownlee earned the Eagle rank the highest Boy Scout honor and has rec eived the emblem badge with a finely designed pin and pendant. He also received a miniature emblem pin. Gardner and friends are proud of his well deserved honor.

Coughlin claims Mid-Continent petroleum rates fair and steady

In a concluding installment R J Coughlin attacks Westland Oil for alleged disruption of a long standing rate arrangement for Mid-Continent shipments. Glasgow publisher wins libel suit

A $30,000 libel case against T J Hocking publisher of the Courier was decided for Hocking. B O Evered sued over an editorial dated February 12 1982 criticizing his work as an investigator in the Arnot case. The trial rehashed Arnot matter and the verdict was unanimous.

Reduced Income Taxes Yield Bigger Refunds

Government refunds for 1932 totaled 550 552 564, up from 1931's 6 478 930, aided by a Supreme Court ruling on tax exemptions for incompetent Oklahoma Indians. Largest refunds went to Pratt Company of Boston, Lehigh & Wilkes Barre Coal, Botany Worsted Mills, and National Union and Chemical. notable individuals include Lilly Busch and William Vanderbilt. Denver restaurant invites public to eat with no questions

A. A. McVittie, a Denver restaurant manager, opened a dining event telling the public to come and eat with no questions asked. Nearly 5000 persons accepted the invitation, filling the venue and drawing attention across the city.

54 Lose Lives In Illinois Mine Disaster

In Moweaqua on December 26 a catastrophic mine explosion trapped 700 feet underground. By Monday 27 more miners were found dead, making 39 total fatalities. Rescue efforts continued as fresh air and a perilous bore attempted to reach survivors, but all trapped workers died from afterdamp.
