Poplar Paper Wins County Printing Contract Bid

The county advertised a biennial printing contract with three bidders: The Poplar Standard, The Searchlight Culbertson, and The West Point Herald. The Standard offered the lowest bid and favorable terms including free board proceedings and most legal notices, while The Searchlight and The Herald were deemed out of contention. The contract covers publications, record books, and job printing, with expected annual costs around 3,000 to 4,000 dollars, and a decline next year to about 60 percent of this year’s price.

Tax payments good considering times

Dwight Lohn, county treasurer, reports tax receipts this year total 189607.58 versus 213960.71 last year, a drop largely due to reduced property valuations. The Great Northern railroad paid about 103000, and rumors of penalty cancellation kept some from paying. Interest was cut from one percent to one half percent per month last session.

Attractive Christmas Displays Parade Stores In Town

Up and down the street store windows are decked with attractive Christmas greens and a wide array of goods. Toy shops offer good assortments and many lines are at lower prices than before. Gifts for children and adults fill shelves as Christmas trees candies and nuts fancy foods for dinner go on display. A tour of the stores presents many gift ideas.

Local Freights Have Longer Runs

The Great Northern avoids tying up local freights at Wolf Point overnight and will run through from Williston to Glasgow and from Glasgow to Havre. Envoy A. J. Packer of Miles City visited this week soliciting for the Salvation Army and reported persistent local support for regular contributions.

Former Herald Owner Now in Minneapolis

The editor received a welcome letter from Jack Wiest once co owner of The Herald. He came to Wolf Point in 1918 and homesteaded on the Southside. He leased The Herald, later partnered with C. L. Marshall, and the arrangement dissolved when the Herald incorporated. Now with the Morning Tribune extras board in Minneapolis he recalls Wolf Point days and invites Montana shops to contact him at 403 Fourth St. S. E., Minneapolis.

County pays back after delinquent Het overspend

The item notes no bids advertised and Bill Jerome charged over two thousand dollars for publishing the delinquent Het. A county surplus is involved as funds are returned. The Standard feared crooked dealings, but no illegality surfaced. The Standard’s bid for free legal and publishing services was accepted without charge.

Frombeoy In Again Hank Frombey Arrests Night

Hank Frombey was arrested late tonight and jailed after alleged drunk and disorderly conduct. Deputies were called to a southeast town area where he and another man allegedly terrorized residents. In a later uptown fight Vern Hub captured him, and he suffered injuries before detention. He reportedly tried to wreck a cell and started a fire with paper and an apple box.

Delilah Simons jailed for failure to pay fine

Mrs Delilah Simons was fined 259 dollars at the Spring term of federal court for a liquor law violation and given until October 1 to pay. She did not pay, was picked up by federal officers, and jailed, with likely four days or more to serve as ordered.

Seventy Attend School Meeting Across Counties

Seventy school principals trustees and legislators gathered Saturday night at the schoolhouse to discuss proposed state school legislation with M P Moe state high school superintendent. Topics included income and utility taxes to fund schools and shifting the fiscal year. The meeting supported taxes on gas and hydroelectric power for school revenue with Moe schedule to visit Havre Plentywood Miles City and other Northern Pacific points.

County School Census Totals Revealed by Supt Margaret Inglehart

Supt Margaret Inglehart reports county census figures showing 4420 people ages 6 to 21 and 1882 under six. Estimated annual primary entrants about 260 countywide, with District 45 listing 1287 ages 6-21 and 12 under six, predicting roughly 69 new students per year for six years.

Great Northern Holiday Rates Offered for Westbound Travel

Great Northern unveils special holiday fares with westbound at a cent per mile or 60 percent of a one way fare and eastbound at one fare plus 25 cents. The sale runs December 14 to 25 with returns by January 14. Westward starts from Williston on any westward point, with Dec 22 to Jan 4 return limit.

Solid car quality turkeys to New York from Wolf Point

The first car shipment of dressed turkeys from Wolf Point, led by R. Dougherty and crew, delivered 25 000 pounds to the Dairy and Poultry Association at New York. Eighty four growers contributed, with 20 700 pounds prime and 3 700 pounds choice, marking a cooperative marketing effort amid industry pushback from large packing houses. Weather favorable and plans for a January shipment are noted.
